Raid card?

Go to solution Solved by scottyseng,

Hi :)

Im going to build a new computer(http://pcpartpicker.com/p/PZQCTW), and im going to use two  Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drives and was thinking to run them in a raid and i wasnt sure if i should get a raid controller card?

I would just use the onboard RAID on the motherboard. A decent RAID card will cost you $500-700 with the battery backup unit installed. It's simply not worth it for a two drive RAID system. The other thing to note is that the onboard Intel RAID supports TRIM while most RAID controllers do not.

I've used both Samsung 840 Pro's and 850 Pro's on hardware RAID controllers, they don't like it and can get all screwed up. The 840 Pro's worked significantly better than the 850 Pro's but the performance loss over time due to no TRIM took the shine off the setup. The 850 Pro's just threw a wobbly and would perform worse than an HDD.

If using hardware RAID you must use server SSD's for optimal compatibility and long term performance, lessons learned the hard way :) I still use the 840 Pro's in my server on hardware RAID but took the 850 Pro's out and put them in my desktop on a SAS HBA (needed more ports) and use Windows Storage Spaces.
