RAM for i5 6500

Seems like there's a big difference between 2133 MHz and anything higher when it comes to DDR4, but I'm going with a locked i5 6500 and I don't want to mess anything up. Anything higher then 2133 MHz is OC, and comes with 1.35V instead of 1.2V, and could fry the CPU or cause problems because of the higher voltage.

 

Is this correct?

 

If yes, could I salvage some performance if I go with CL13 instead of CL14? CL13 would cost me about $70 while the CL14 $90. CL14 is 70, CL13 is 90. Does it worth it?

 

Should I go with 1x8GB or 2x4GB?

Simply because CL13 memory is cheaper for him and because of dual channel. He'll most likely not end up going above 16GB of RAM, so he is fine by using 2x 4GB.

The latency timings aren't important for "normal" people

Dyslexic moment. I agree. I literally read CL14 as being the lesser expensive latency.

 

If it's general productivity then 1x8 is fine, though.

This is an i3, but it's probably the same for the i5. In most cases there's a loss of 5-15 FPS in games, there's even an extreme scenario with Ryse, where FPS can get halved.

2133MHz 4x4 or 2666MHz 4x4 what ever the board can use!  CL is worth it...
