Christmas build after robbery

Go to solution Solved by Arc_Jester,

Well damn you guys are fast. Not a little fast but lightning fast oh my word.

Thanks to all on the massively speedy response.

1st: i see 2 or 3 of you have each said to rather take AMD's R9 390. I find myself somewhat loyal to  Nvidia as i am most used to their products(having used them for upwards of 7 years), BUT I'm not opposed to change. Both GPUs come in at roughly the same price for me and although i do see a noticeable difference in favour of AMD (+- 10 fps) on certain games i wonder if the added heat, power consumption and noise justify it?

2nd: It appears from your comments that my power supply is sufficient only for the Nvidia NOT the AMD?

again many thanks

PSU is fine for both at stock, for OC'ing you will need a 600-650w PSU.

Hi guys.

Entirely new to the forums but not so much to Linus itself.

Backround: was using an mdi laptop with a 765m inside and planning to do a full pc build sometime next year. Unfortunately life happened and i and my computer and 90% of my other pc related things stolen a fe weeks ago.

So, i thought I'd bite the bullet and build myself a nice PC that remained very portable as I would need to move it between houses(by car and only around 1-2km) every second week. Soooo on with the show.

Edit: wil primarily be used for gaming and general use with occasional video editing and development

Specs:

  • Case: Bitfenix prodigy m (Smallest case i can find that will reliably work with all my components and not need water-cooling)
  • GPU: MSI GTX 970 Gaming Twin Frozr V
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 (may bump that up to one i can over clock depending on the cost)
  • Ram: thinking 8/16 GB
  • Standard heatsink
  • 1TB hdd and potentially a small(64GB) ssd
  • motherboard: MSI H81 Chipset SATA3 6.0Gb/s USB 3.0 MB
  • Power supply: Antec 500W 80+ High Performance Power Supply

Tell me what you think/ if it will all work together and for all that, Thanks!

Also i plan to include 2 screens, one for each house.

Live in South Africa so budget in rands (Thinking around R16000) but its really more the theoretical side I need advice on. The costing and budget i will do myself but i need to know if it physically will run? I am slightly nervous that my PSU is not enough.

Many thanks

Sorry for your loss :( but get the r9 390 instead of the 970. Otherwise the build is fine

Also, welcome to the forum :)

If he changes to an AMD card, I would suggest getting an EVGA 650w G2.

R9 390 instead, maybe an 80+ bronze PSU, and if you are going non-k i5's go with the i5-4460.

64GB is too small and just isnt worth the money for an SSD minimum is 120GB really, but if you can try and get a 256GB, also you will probably need a bit more wattage for the PSU or at least a more efficient one.

Don't know if this will help, but I did a build a few weeks back with this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112408&cm_re=lianli-_-11-112-408-_-Product

Now obviously you would have to change up most of your whole build for this, but if you want it to be portable than this is an excellent solution

(take in mind that you would have to mount a mini GPU, this won't support a full size graphics card. Oh yeah and it's mITX)

remember if you do get a k series processor get a good z97 board instead of the h81 board

thanks for all the comments.

It seems there's a big support for AMD over the 970; can anyone tell me why? Is it simply the slightly higher performance at a virtually identical cost?

Thanks for the comments on motherboards and PSU in terms of OC'ing; if i go the OC potential route i will bump up the PSU and motherboard a bit.

We recommend the best card you can afford and currently AMD have the better cards for the price. You're welcome  :)
