So during the summer my SSD more or less died, only a few months old. It had some file corruption issues and Windows reported it having errors that needed to be fixed from time to time.

I RMA'd it and got a brand new one (in a new retail package and everything). The new one worked excellently, no errors no nothing this last month I've had it. But now all of a sudden, the last week I've had some weirdness where the PC takes longer than usual to shut down - the fans still spin and the LED strips are still lit but the monitors are off and everything. Usually I've been unable to wait for it to finish because it seems like it's going on forever so I hold the power button for about 2 sec (about half the full 5 sec to cut the power for some reason!) and then it turns itself off. I didn't expect the SSD to be the cause though since these symptoms are entirely different from what I experienced with the previous faulty drive as well as the fact that Windows didn't report any drive errors the same way it did with that drive.

Back to the point however, it's 1 month since I received the replacement drive and when I tried to start the computer today after getting home from school I was greeted by an error message: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

I rebooted into the BIOS to discover two things:

1. POST took much longer than usual, it froze for 5-10 seconds before opening the BIOS.

2. The drive was seemingly not recognized and wasn't listed in the BIOS which instead said "Not Present" for the port it was plugged in to (My 2 other drives were listed as they should).

A list of things I've tried without success:

  • Unplugging other devices
  • Trying different cables, including the ones that worked 100% with my drives
  • Tried the same cables with the other drives, they were recognized perfectly fine
  • Plugged it into a different computer, unplugging the hard drive and using the same cables for the SSD

Things yet to try:

  • Currently in the process of trying to power-cycle the drive (leave it on the BIOS screen for 20 min or something, then unplug it and cycle it like so)
  • Leave it unplugged overnight

It's now friday so I won't be able to do an RMA until' Monday and preferrably I would prefer not to pay about $45 in return shipping again. If I need to do so though, I suppose I could contact the retailer instead or sending it directly to OCZ.

clear cmos?

Don't see how that would make a difference as it didn't work in an entirely different computer that is known to work perfectly fine.

What's the usage scenario for your drive? Is it just as OS drive or are you constantly writing to it?

Personally though, I wouldn't touch OCZ stuff with somebody else's 10 foot pole.

Basically just OS drive.

I used to stay away from them but since it got a 5 year warranty and Linus said they were supposed to not have all the problems they used to have I gave it a try.

I send off an email to the retailer, hopefully I'll get a good reply from them.

Update: The retailer will issue an RMA and cover the return shipping!
