M.2 512gb & 250gb SSDs in RAID 0

Colomon84

So I'm looking at a M.2 drive for my OS and main files, don't really know much about M.2 drives.

Then I was wondering if its possible to RAID 0 my 2 other 2.5" 250gb SSDs to put games on?

I've searched around on google and haven't found a reliable answer.

This way I have a reliable source for my OS and misc files while my slightly less reliable RAID 0 setup would only lose game files if one drive crashed.

So you want to RAID 0 a 500 GB and 250 GB drive?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.... very interesting. I doubt it would work on software RAID. Maybe if you had a dedicated raid card then it might but not 100% sure. They both use different controllers any way right? And also 512GB M.2 SSD HOW RICH ARE YOU!

EDIT:

Would RAID Card even work because M.2?! -_- lol did not realize all the possibilities of failure

EDIT:

What @IreMinMon said. Unless you want to do it for fun/experience.

EDIT: (crossed out lines xD - misread)

If you had a dedicated RAID Card, you could set up 2 of your SSD's to 1 Logical drive (RAID 0) and your M.2 for your Boot. However, I am not sure about software raid.

As far as I'm concerned, there really is no need for RAID0 anymore. Of course you dould RAID0 SSDs, whether they use PCI-E (M.2) or SATA interface to connect to the motherboard, just like HDDs, I just kinda think you're losing more than gaining (if one drive dies, you will loose data on both drives). Since you say you would be running games off of those SSDs, data loss probally isn't your top concern, so, do however you please.

M.2 SSD is basically an SSD on a PCI-E 4-lane extension card. SSDs moved towards PCI-E interfaces to avoid speed bottlenecks of SATA interfaces. To use one of this, you will need a PCI-e port (4 lanes +).

If you want to do it then it should be possible, but SSD's are way fast enough for games, you won't notice a difference between a non raid SSD and 2 SSD's in raid 0

No, he wants M.2 for OS and 2 additional SATA SSDs in RAID0, separate from the PCI-E drive.

Completely miss-read.

You can raid0 those easily. Theres even a guide for that on Techtips channel  :P I tried raid0 once but had failure after 2 months so i wouldn't rely on the data safety that mutch when using raid0 so just keep games there :D

So basically it IS possible but not really a noticeable performance gain, just buy a bigger standalone SSD for games and keep the M.2 for my OS?

There are also SATA M.2 SSDs. Samsung 850 EVO M.2 for example.
