SSD problems (all programs stop responding)

Go to solution Solved by Chunk Of Norris,

I got a refund for the 256 GB Vector and got myself a 500 GB Samsung 850 EVO for the same price.

Hi,

My applications tend to stop responding as soon as they have to do anything. I suspect it is because of my OCZ Vector SSD because in task maneger the disk is at 99 % load most of the time and I was unable to run CrystalDiskMark (I clicked run/start but nothing happened). In CrystalDiskInfo and OCZ SSD Guru it says the drive has a health of 54 %, at 13000 hours, which it says is good. My laptops OCZ Vertex 4 has 99 % health after 2000 hours.

When I start CrystalDiskMark the disk usage in task manager goes up to 40 MB/s and then starts falling as disk usage hits 99 % and ands up at about 4 MB/s

Is there any way I can be sure the problem is with the SSD before I send it in for repair as it will cost me money if it's not faulty? How low can the healt go before it is no longer good?

Do you have a virus? A year  or two ago my sister got a virus that kept the HDD pinned at 99% usage, making the computer almost unusable.

I'd recommend backing up your files ASAP. 40MB/s to 4MB/s is a massive dip in performance for a disk test, considering that you mentioned programs stop responding. For now you're good(ish), but start saving up for a new SSD. At about 20-30% health you should consider getting a new SSD imo smile.png

Do you have a virus? A year or two ago my sister got a virus that kept the HDD pinned at 99% usage, making the computer almost unusable.

OP has a SSD, not a hard drive... Both storage mediums work completely differently to each other. I don't think a virus would cause something like this. I think OP has just had his SSD in use for a long while (13000 hours = 541 days) and it's soon time for OP to get a new SSD.

The Vertex 4 is the first pretty good OCZ SSD after their first 2-3 designs were so unreliable.  Vector's should be fine too.  What Windows are you using?  If 8 or 10, sort usage by HDD and see what's causing all the writes?

I don't really believe in viruses, but perhaps that is the case. It is not pinned at 99 % though. Whilst I'm not touching the PC the usage is between 0 % and 10 %, but as soon as I start doing anything it goes to 99 %.

I have all my documents and photographs sycronised with MEGA. I used to use my own NAS, but I have moved for studies and couldn't bring it with me. The trouble is going to be downloading all the programs on this increadibly shitty Internet connection.

I'm using Windows 10. Problem is that now it suddenly appears to be working fine except for not being able to run CrystalDiskMark. It is very inconsistent, but I will check when it is having problems again.

Heh, another one of the uninformed.  Starting from the Vertex 4 they have been great.  They finally had a controller that didn't suck and didn't randomly die.

I've been trying to replicate the problems now and it seems to only happen when you do somthing which is demanding for the drive. I'm currentry doing a file transfer of 25 GB and it's going at 1,4 MB/s after a peak (in the beginning) of 230 MB/s

"System" seems to be at the top of the list a bit in adittion to Windows Explorer, CrystalDiskMark and Firefox.

Got a screenshot of high usage when not transferring files?

It's not getting high usage when I'n not transfering files. Thinking back I was also transfering files yesterday, but I didn't think that was the cause of the issue. I shall try to use my PC for a while without doing filetransfers and see if I have any trouble then. I will be going to bed quite soon though, so I will have to continue this tomorrow I think.

...but if it is only struggeling when doing file transfers or other demanding work, does that mean that the problem is with the SSD?

not uninformed, i have experience with ocz and i never want to again, i owned a vector SSD and i HATED IT, random freezing, slow, it never worked right and i had two ( got an RMA one) this is why i have 840 pros i'll never choose another company for SSD's than samsung

Every product in existence has bad samples.  What then if the Samsung fails? If anything, Intel's are more reliable.

yet, samsung are named the best by nearly every computer guy i can think of, and yes but not as bad as OCZ did.

Yes intel would be next on my list if samsung failed, but the only product which was kinda bad was the 840 evo, and i even own one of them and it is still better.

I've had some bad experiences with OCZ too. I started with two Vectors, one broke and I got it replaced, then one of them broke again and I got it refunded and now I'm having issues with this.

The PC seems to be doing alright when I'm not transfering files, btw. I will blame it on the SSD and send it in and hopefully get a refund.
