So my CPU AIO cooler leaked straight onto my gpu so its basically fked. I'm looking at a r9 390 or 390x. There is about a ~$50 difference in the two on newegg in the US. Is it worth the premium for the 390x?

Have you tried to repair the GPU? It is possible.

If you can't fix it, I think the 390X is worth the premium.

I do believe the 390 has more OC head room than the 390x, since the 390x = 390 + more cores + slightly higher GPU clock.

The cores are : 2560  vs  2816.

and you can push the 390 to get 390x frequency. All you're missing are the cores.

Remember the 290 vs 290x? it's the same story all over again. AnandTech has them tested: http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1068?vs=1056

What could I do to maybe repair it? I wouldn't mind trying but it was pretty wet.. Red liquid dripping out of the rear exhaust of my 290x

I would try to disassemble it as much as possible and leave it to dry thoroughly. Then, swab isopropyl alcohol over the PCB to mitigate water damage and corrosion. Leave it to dry again, then put it in a system and pray to God.

How long has it been between the leak and now? If it's a while, it might be too late, it's best to do the above steps immediately after a leak.

Is it in warranty? If so, you might be able to request an RMA.

If all of these fail, bury it at the end of your yard and go and buy a 390X. I think 50 dollars for a 390X over a 390 is incredibly reasonable, here in little ol' England the R9 390X is the equivalent of nearly 150 dollars more than the 390.

Would the rice bag method help in removing water from the PCB? Just curious...

Possibly, not sure though. You haven't got all that much to lose, feel free to try it.
