Just looking to try Skyrim on PC for the first time, preferably with some good mods. I have never installed mods before, so just trying to see if there are any recommendations for tutorials, etc so I can get started. I will be picking up the new Asus ROG pg27aq (4k/IPS/gsync/60hz) here soon and want to give Skyrim another go. My rig is powered by 5820k, single 980ti, and 16gb 2800 ram so I think I have some headroom before frame rates become an issue. I have very mild overclocks on my rig/gpu, nothing fancy. I have just recently started PC gaming so Im not a refresh rate kinda guy, definitely a graphics guy, Im used to 30hz, so not worried about fps unless they drop to that level. Any recommendations for ENB tutorials or the best graphics mods would be appreciated, KEEPING IN MIND 4K. Thanks guys.

Don't expect a fully modded skyrim to run great at 4k on a single 980ti.

Assuming you play around with the graphical settings, then you should be able to find a decent median between butter and graphics.

First off, nexus mod manager is a friend. Google it, and download the latest version. There are dozens and dozens of tutorials online for how to use it, as well as how to download and install mods using it.

If you want some mod recommendations, then start out with the basics.

Must Have Skyrim Mods

  • SkyUI
  • SKSE - Skyrim Script Extender
  • Static Mesh Improvement Mod
  • Unofficial Skyrim Patch/Update
  • 2k Textures

Now, I actually a short while back, fully reworked my modpack on skyrim to make it as challenging as I could, while keeping it playable. Needless to say, I've died dozens and dozens of times, but all the while still having fun. This particular modpack also adds in new fighting ai mechanics, new armors, weapons, new animal AI, new animals, new spells, all decently balanced and mostly lore friendly. As well as adding in a lot of little things, like more immersive towns and areas, better sound coverage and flora, as well as an almost entirely remapped sound profile.

All in all, this is my favorite and most lore abiding pack I've made, that is moderately balanced, and actually has made the game playable again, even after my 300hrs in it.

Plz follow your topics so people don't have to quote or call you out.

I would opt for Mod Organizer rather than Nexus Mod Manager, MO is available on the nexus as well.

EcthelionOtW textures are among my favourites, it pains me to say that he/she/they took down their mage robes texture replacers because of repeated asset theft cause I adore them.  However the author has a lot of other textures still available that are awesome for you to check out.

There are an army of NPC replacers for female NPC, look into it and choose to your taste.  For 4k the bijin mods are a good place to start.  As for male NPCs I don't really know what the options are, but "MacKoms Real Skin for Men" was the one I tried and it was good enough so they didn't look like their own low resolution race anymore.  I think it's actually quite good for a catch all tbh.

Might want to try More Dwemered Textures -the Markarth and Dwemer ruins-HD.  The dwemer texts I use are not available atm.

May want to look into LODs and how far you want to go with those.  Either DynDoLOD of just installing vanilla pre-generated ones, or none at all.

and using Optimizer Textures by AdPipino  to generate minimaps for textures can help performance without quality loss. but will eat up more SSD/HDD space....like a lot if your not downgrading/optimizing texture detail.  Also resizes the odd improperly sized texture(usually from some mod) to their correct dimensions.  Think of this as using more refined fuel for your sports car, even though the tool can do much more.

Feel free to skim the Skyrim Central thread for odds and sods

For ENB, sorry I can't afford the performance hit so I've very little experience with them.  I love the videos for Natural Realism ENB for NLA by Lunayah though.
