$1400AUD Gaming Build

Ok, so my friend has asked me for a $1400 gaming build. Please give me advice on this build. Do not give me any advice that involves the US...I live in Australia.

Perfect for gaming

CPU Cooler: Intel BXRTS2011AC CPU Cooler  ($14.00 @ CPL Online)

He's not overclocking and this cooler should be fine.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard  ($229.00 @ CPL Online)

This mobo should be fine...it doesn't need any special features

Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Blue 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  ($66.00 @ Centre Com)

Enough memory for gaming...he's going to upgrade later

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($99.00 @ IJK)

Doesn't need an SSD, unnecessary bills and money. Plenty of storage

Eh...its a case

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX750B BRONZE 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($98.00 @ CPL Online)

You dont need an i7 for gaming. Also out of all the EVGA PSU's the NEX ones are apparently not the best.

i7 is perfect for Fallout 4 and is more than capable of doing 1080p60 gaming...plus if that's his budget...why not??

Can you give some reasoning why its perfect for fallout 4? Fallout 4 isnt even a very intensive game. An i7 is more so for editing and 3D modelling purposes, more like a workstation build. If you went with an i5, which would do the same thing as the i7 as he wont need or even be using anything the i7 offers which differs from the i5, he could get a better GPU and also maybe even an SSD.

Theres the updated build...its a really good build for the budget. I have put an SSD in, he doesn't need a better GPU because a better GPU would be the GTX 980 Ti or the Fury X
But I'll swap the i7 for an i5 just because you said so and for no reason whatsoever because he has an ssd, a hdd, a really good GPU and a really good CPU, but I'll swap it out for no apparent reason

If its purely for gaming, he would benefit more from a better GPU than a better CPU. Like I said before, he doesnt actually need anything the i7 offers compared to the i5.

WHAT BETTER GPU CAN YOU GET?? DID YOU NOT READ THE LAST MESSAGE?! The 980 Ti is $1000 and so is the Fury X. The only just as good, more expensive one you could get is the 980 and I don't see any point.

The i7 is pretty much the exact same price as the i5 4690K. I am going for the i7 because it is perfect for gaming. This also means that he would be able to stream if he wants to.

I did read the last message. A 980 would be better for sure. Nvidia offers better update support and features, and if you already said he is only gaming at 1080p, the extra VRAM that the 390 offers wouldnt matter anyway. Why are you getting mad, im trying to help you not detriment your build.

"i7 for an i5 just because you said so and for no reason whatsoever" Did you not read any of the reasoning i posted before. There is absolutely lots of reasoning to go for an i5 over an i7 if he is only using the build for gaming...

You keep saying it is perfect for gaming. Yet you give no evidence to support this whatsoever. Give me your exact reasons why you think its better, because if it is just for gaming, it wont make any difference and you will just be wasting your friends money.

Also you said he isnt overclocking so why would you even be looking at the highest end i5, he could just get a 4460 and itd be fine.

If you go for i7, I'd stick to the z170 chipset and go for a 6700k for higher single threaded performance from clockspeed and IPC; this will be better if it's just for games, and will save you on the mobo too, plus you get an updated platform with DDR4 and DMI 3. i7 might be better than i5 if you want to keep it for a while, but i5 will suffice for now in almost all games. You could also take the non unlocked version (though clockspeed is a little lower) of the skylake cpus as you aren't gonna OC. Heck if you don't want to multi gpu either you can go for a H170 mobo! You could put the money towards a bigger ssd or a gpu upgrade (though you're right the value decreases from the 390, and you may want to buy into Pascal instead?). Alternatively you could get the 390 then crossfire it a little later on.

If you make a post contradicting mine that doesn't directly address my claims, or cites 'facts' without evidence, I'm probably not going to bother responding to it, because you probably didn't bother reading my post properly, and because life is too short. It doesn't mean I don't have an answer for you. It means I'm not dignifying you with a response.

You are not helping me at all. He said that he wants the R9 390 specifically for Fallout. Therefore I am keeping the 390. As to looking at the 980...theres really no performance difference. As seen here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1559?vs=1442
The 980 is only a little bit better than the 390, the 390 has more vram, therefore, it is not worth it changing to the 980
If he has enough money for an i7 with it, then he can get an i7

If you can afford an i7 then get one. You're already getting a 390 so its not like you can save money and get a much better GPU.

Thank you...at least someone agrees with me

OK...what about if I went for the i5 then went multi GPUs?? Maybe 2 R9 290s?? or 2 R9 380s or 270xs

AND HE'S ALSO ABLE TO STREAM IF HE WISHED

In Australia, more specifically QLD, lol, good luck...

"Only a little bit better" It offers like 10+ fps on all of those 1080p benchmarks(The other 1440p and 4k benchmarks are redundant here as he is only looking at 1080p).

Do you even realise what VRAM is? For 1080p he doesnt even need that extra VRAM lmao. It would literally make 0 difference, especially seen in those benchmarks, the 980 (with less VRAM) outperforms the 390 in pretty much every result lol.

Again, you keep saying he has enough money for an i7, and that is better for gaming, and even when I ask you why you cant tell me why. Because you dont know why.

I am not trying to be a dick, I am honestly trying to help you.

2 Things:

1. Australia has sufficient internet to be able to stream so yes, you dont know anything, maybe you should do some research

2. VRAM is good for Fallout because it's graphically intensive

3. i7 is good for gaming AND streaming (key word AND). He wants to be able to game and stream. The i7 is sufficient for gaming and streaming and the connection is also sufficient. My current connection of 25/5 can easily stream.

That is 3 things lmao...

1. Australia's internet (In your/my case QLD) is sufficient for very very bad streaming, nobody would want to watch that crap quality. Don't tell me I don't know anything, I have a Bachelors Degree in IT whilst studying at university in QLD. QLD is still very far behind in networking infrastructure (unless you live at a university lol) and does not offer the kind of speeds to sufficiently stream at any quality people would even want to watch.

2. That is wrong. Even if he was going for 1440p you'd still only need about 3-4GB of VRAM. Fallout 4's graphics are terribly bad considering other AAA titles currently out. Fallout 4 is perfectly fine with just 2GB of VRAM at 1080p. (if you had done any research into the game itself rather than just assuming its a very graphic intense game you'd know this).

3. For the level of streaming he would be doing, an i5 would still be sufficient still for his needs...

You come to a forum asking for help/advice, then when people offer their help, you disagree with them even when you don't actually know what you are talking about. I don't get kids who come into the forum like this and yell at people thinking they know everything. Whats the point?

1. We have internet plans that go up to 100/40 mbps. This is sufficient for 1080p60 3500 streaming. DO NOT tell someone who lives in Australia that the internet is bad because maybe you should take a year in our shoes.

2. He wants an R9 390. Therefore I am getting him an R9 390. So no (NVidia fanboy), I am not getting the GTX 980

3. I am getting an i7 because it is within his budget and he is able to afford one.

I come asking for help and explain the reasons why NOT to get those things. I know what I am talking about as you are not in my situation. I don't think I know everything, I know a lot of things and know what I am talking about. Maybe you should give some useful advice instead of fanboy advice. If his budget can fit an i7 into it, then that's what I'll put in.

Wow. I have given evidence behind every single reasoning, I am not a "Nvidia Fanboy". You are an arrogant entitled kid who needs to read peoples comments.

Enjoy your R9 390 when AMD's drivers aren't even properly optimized for Fallout 4 yet lmaooo.

And have fun wasting your friends money when he doesn't need an i7.

I tried to help you, and all you did was be a complete dick back towards me.

You clearly have some kind of learning disability, and should really learn what you're talking about before you try argue your position.

Hahaha...love the fact that you live in Australia and think that Australia's internet isn't sufficient for streaming. Maybe the NBN hasn't been rolled out to you yet.

OK...just looked up a couple of things. I'll take in your advice, but I'll still keep the 390 for water cooling. I'll throw in the i5-6600K with the R9 390 and some water cooling for the CPU.

Hahaha...love the fact that you live in Australia and think that Australia's internet isn't sufficient for streaming. Maybe the NBN hasn't been rolled out to you yet.

Im sorry that I got angry. I really am trying to help you.

You are right I dont have NBN yet, but quite a lot of QLD doesnt have it yet either. Even with NBN streaming can struggle a bit but its definitely do-able.

The 390 is still a good card, Just might take a little bit longer for Fallout to be 100% optimized with that GPU.

That i5 is a great option and im sure it will suit all his needs, and with the K (Unlocked version) im sure he will have fun overclocking it a little.

Yeah...fair enough...I have a 25/5 connection because I live in main Brisbane. I tried streaming...my pc cant handle 720p30 streaming...haha

So what I'm going to do is keep the 390, but throw in the i5 6600K with Antec Kuhler cooling and keep the r9 390 for a more than capable of gaming with the ssd and plenty of games can fit on the 1TB HDD...I mean HEAPS...my friend told me how many games he can fit on it...must be like more that 50 games there...like all of CoD (not bo3) and like CSGO WOW and...yeah

What I might also try and do is fit 16GB of DDR3 into the budget too... and maybe I should just go with 2 r9 290s or something...i'll have a look
OK...thank you for your advice and I apologize if I sounded aggressive...I tend to get aggressive at times....especially on these forums and Intel fanboys and...yeah. Here is the final build:

Its okay haha.

So I have some notes about this current build.

Since he is getting an unlocked CPU, you should get a Z series motherboard to allow for overclocking.

Also it should be fine, but you should just double check the GPU size is compatible with the case. Sometimes those 3-Fan coolers on GPU's can be very long, so its always safe to make sure the case can fit a longer card.

Other than that it should be fine :)

I think PC Part Picker decides on the GPU size compatibility thing
