Old Laptop Tuning

TheV_Machine

Hi there

Need some help what should be kinda obvious xD.

I have a old Laptop. And i fuckin love this thing and it served me good since 2009. And i really want to use this good old boy as daily driver some more years. But as it is normal, there are some questions for me...

First, there is a scrappy, old, lame, whatever hdd in tjis puppy and i want to replace this thing with a maybe 120 gig ssd. The os should not be a problem, i would make a bootable backup file and put that on the ssd. also i shouldnt be hard to find a ssd that fits. my question: would the effect of the much more faster ssd good or would the maybe lame sata connection in the laptop make the effect not worth the effort?( and using the old, no longer needed hdd as a portable hdd device with a usb adapter)

And the other question: my buddy works with a x64 bit processor and samsung (sigh)put an x32 bit oem of windows on it. There are 4 gigs of frekkin ddr2 :D  in the system and the os only seems to use 2.31 gigs. Is that a probem with the unfitting combo of cpu and os architecture or is the ram maybe faulty? i checked with the inbuild program of windows for ram-problems and it detected none. if the ram is just faulty would i be able to buy two new  identical so-dimm ddr2 2gigs ramsticks and use them as a normal dual kit ? Can that work?

Thanks for help :D

(i know my english is baaaaaaad xD , sry for that)

You might not be getting the most out of the SSD if your laptop has a SATA 2 connection. However, I would almost guarantee that it would be much faster than your HDD. With regards to your memory usage, look at Resource Monitor and see what is using up your memory. Large memory use is a software issue rather than a hardware issue. Also, even though I find a x64 version of Windows runs much faster than its x86 (32-bit) equivalent, I usually use 32-bit versions for systems with 4 GB or less of RAM. As long as it's not Windows XP, you can simply install a x64 version with the same product key.

Im not sure if the laptop has a sata 2 connection, i only know i have it since 2009. how would be the effect with a sata1 connection build in? THanks for the tip with the resmon.exe, i didnt thought about that, but if i go into the control center and open the system window, it shows me that 2.31 gigs from 4 gigs are only available in general. And am i able to make  new bootable windows 10 iso if i already updated to win10 deleted the old win7 version and the sticker with the product key isnt readable at all? so basically i dont know the product key for the old win7 version of the laptop.

and thanks for replying :D

I doubt your laptop will have SATA 1 if it's from 2009. SATA 1 is 2003 technology (maybe even older, don't know exact year but it's at least a decade). If you want to make a Windows 10 ISO, follow the link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10 . Once you've updated to Windows 10, you don't have to worry about the product key because Microsoft links your product key to your motherboard which allows it to automatically activate every time you reinstall. However, if you can salvage it, you should try to copy down the key.

I didnt know that sata1 was from 2003 and earlier. Thx for the information. So it could be a sata2 connection. Nice :)

If i understood this in a correct way, i can just install win10 x64 with the key of my from win7 updated win10 x86, because the lisence key accept both and is written into my hardware? Would be awesome :D
