So i just bought my second hand Intel Core 2 Quad 8300 and tried putting it in my MSI G31M2 V1 motherboard which has the latest BIOS (at least that's what the program for installing BIOS is saying) and it just doesn't work, it does boot up but only i after i hold down the power button and start the computer again. I tried alot of stuff like using sysprep.exe but still nothing worked so im wondering if i should use my plan which is to get a new hard drive and install windows while using the new CPU on that and then put in my old HDD back, because apperently i don't want to loose any data. Right now im using my old CPU. So om open for suggestions and questions

I don't see how the OS can effect the actual boot up of a system considering it has nothing to do with the system POST test. If your hard drive was bad, then yeah that could do it.

Have you tried doing a simple CMOS reset to clear any old settings left behind from the older CPU?

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Do you mean reseting my bios?

Yes. Reset BIOS. Clear CMOS. CLRTC. Lots of interchangeable terms for it. :P.

Anyways often when switching CPUs certain settings get left in the wrong mode. RAM timings are the most common culprits and the motherboard doesn't always automatically compensate.

No, it just resets to default settings and the BIOS will "relearn" on boot what settings it needs.

It won't reset the BIOS to a later version or anything. And definitely won't cause lost data on your hard drive.

So the bios worked better then it would before, but the first time it started it was a black screen, so i restarted and there it was starting windows, but it got me scared because those four colors took their time but when they should have started, after they had stopped moving, nothing happened, so i restarted again and i was prompted the option of startup repair twice, once after starting the pc and after that when starting windows didn't work after choosing startup repair, but when i decided it the second time : Goshdarn blue bum screen

So i tried again with the fixing startup thing and it worked, i was greatly happy, but then let down after it just froze on the desktop and that was it

You might have a bad hard drive. If you can hook it up to another PC and run some smart checks on it that would be a good idea.

Not possible, sadly. Plus i did try with another hard drive that may have been older but i think that just because it had windows XP, but that didn't work as well
