Alright, so I'm more or less making a NAS out of my old computer using Windows Server 2012 R2, and I need to know how to set folder access.

So basically, there's a hard drive in the system with a bunch of folders for different users (plus a guest folder), and I need to get it so that i can only access my own folder, my mom can only access hers, and so on. But I can't do anything IP based right now since I won't have the system at the right house for a little over a week. So how can I do this? You know, set it to mount the folder as a network drive (which I know how to do) and then require a username and password to access the folder? Sorry if this doesn't make a ton of sense because it's late and I'm tired.

well you need to figure that out (its a nightmare FYI) and then right click on the folder --> sharing --> advanced

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

As thekeemo said a Domain would make your life easier, but it isn't required. Install Windows server as you would any other windows install, create shares the same way. Just make sure you have 1 user for your mother, and one for yourself, if you have a domain, join your other devices to the domain and your good to go (if you don't have a domain you will need to login to the local accounts of the windows server when mapping the drive etc etc). Access-based enumeration will hide files that the user doesn't have read/write access to.

Setup your folders to have the following NTFS permissions : Everyone: Deny, Your account: full control. You can see your own folder and no-one else can see them. assuming your mother's folders are configured the same way she will be able to see only her folders.

Open up the dashboard application and go to users and setup users and set their folders, It's been awhile since I did this and It may have only been a feature in Essentials R2.
