Hello!

I have a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display.

Recently the aluminum case (on the outside) has been getting dirty. I make sure my hands are not covered in dirt etc before I use it, but it still is just normal hand 'shit' that gets on components. Mainly around the trackpad, but all over as well.

What can I use to clean this? I tried isopropyl alcohol but it didn't do much. I haven't tried soap and water yet, though.

Thanks!

Hmm, thanks!

I already have many microfiber cloths (I do short video production on the side), so I can use one of those, and that liquid. Thanks!

While you are talking about cleaning the outer surface of the Macbook, I suggest you also get a compatible screwdriver from iFixit and a can of compressed air.  Open the bottom aluminium cover of the Macbook and clean out the dust that might have gathered, especially around the ventilation ports and fans.  This will extend the life of your Macbook and improve thermal issues. I recommend doing this at least once a year.

Removing the bottom cover should not void your warranty as you are simply opening the cover and using compressed air to clean dust.

And if you do not want to buy one of those hard plastic Macbook covers, you can use skins.  I recommend the skins from DecalGirls: https://www.decalgirl.com

My several year old machines still look nearly brand new.

You can see a skin I have applied on my Retina MacBook pro in the background of this photo.

Yep, I have done this at least two or three times a year, and plan to continue to. I always use a can of air with the fans and overall dust on the motherboard and heatsinks.
