Hey everyone.

I'm just looking for some extra advice on a GPU upgrade.

I have been looking into buying either the Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 Or MSI's R9 390.

My Specs:

Intel 4670k overclocked to 4.2GHZ

GPU: R9 270x

Motherboard: Military class Z87

Ram: Corsair 2 by 4gb (total of 8)

PSU: Corsair TX550M

Case: Fractal R4 Mid tower windowless

Harddrives etc etc

Could anyone  give me a second opinion here. I have 400 euros to spend with 50 euros of space to spend if needs be.

MSI's Radeon has more VRAM, which makes me think that very near into the future a lot of games are going to be utilising this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Josh

I would get the cheapest 390 out of MSI, Sapphire Nitro and XFX and then throw in an SSD boot drive.

I believe if the price is equal, the 390 is a slightly better choice.  Do note that with that PSU, you'll be hitting close to 400w under load.  The TX range is pretty good, but that's still quite a high % usage so expect quite a bit of PSU fan noise.  I'm currently using the TX650w and thinking of going the RMi/RMx 850w or higher PSU so that even with SLI the fan doesn't turn on.

My PSU is by far the noisiest part of my rig.

The 970 is a really good card. Dont worry about the whole "3 and a half Vram" drama since it is still enough to handle anything out there right now. I'm no expert, but I believe you only need huge amounts of vram if you are going to be doing 3-4 monitor set ups or ultra HD resolutions while gaming, and if you plan on sticking to 1-2 monitors at 1080p I think you'll be fine with 3.5 gigs, but please correct me if I am wrong. The 970 does perform better than the 390, but nothing considerable. Its really up to you to decide if you want to stay with team red or switch over to team green :)

You'd probably want to go with the 970 unless your also gonna buy a new psu to power the 390.

I see you use the H440, how is it? I'm getting one soon

I love it.  I would have preferred to get a Noctis 450 mostly because of looks and because it was released the day after I bought my H440.  The airflow is not as bad as people make it out to be.

You're not likely to ever need 8GB of video ram for 1080p. My video card has 6GB and GTA5 doesn't even use it all with maxed settings at the same resolution.
