What are the main differences between the Z170 platform vs the others. I don't plan on overclocking my next build but I want to be able to play games at 2560x1440 or higher with ultra settings or maxed settings do I need an unlocked processor for that or could I viably run a h series or b series mobo i do know it also depends on video card choice anc whatnot but i was thinking if there were places I could save money by not getting overclocking parts when I don't plan to overclock.

The Z series can have features like more PCIe lanes or additional USB ports, but if you find an H or B series motherboard that fits your needs, go for it. If you have no desire to overclock, then don't buy a K series CPU.

Well what's the budget for your next build?

Otherwise you only really want an unlocked CPU if you're trying to run games at 144fps or higher for a 144hz display. a 6700 with an H170 board is fine

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

My next build probably around 2000 I would like to so I 2 970s and I would probably go the route of 2560x1440 or higher I'm more of an mmo player with the occasional battlefield and fps shooter I like pretty graphics. Why would I need an unlocked processor for 144hz monitor?
