So I just want a simple solution for audio when I don't feel like wearing a headset without breaking my wallet.

I have a headset for when I'm gaming or when my boyfriend is in the room with me (both of our battle-stations are in the same small room) but I would like something a little nicer then my laptop or future monitor speakers for when he's not around. It would just be for Netflix, YouTube and other light listening but I'd like it to sound and look nice with my setup. I'd preferably like to keep my budget around $50 but depending on the deal I guess I'd go up to $100. I don't hardly know anything about audio so I figured I'd just ask you guys.

I've seen some people recommend these:

I personally would choose one that has a sub-woofer because that low end rumble really makes the experience of a movie much better.

For that price range, probably a 2.1 setup from Logitech or a similar company. Easy and not complete garbage, all things considered.

So like I said, I hardly know anything about audio.. what's a subwoofer good for? Where do I put it, under my desk?

cheapest decent setup is a lepai LP-2020a+ amp and some cheap speakers from goodwill or a thrift store, and the whole set up beats any "PC speaker" set up.

I have a pair of logitech Z323

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Speaker-System-Z323-Subwoofer/dp/B002FU5QM0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1447189147&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+z323

Excellent speakers for the price, although you might want an extension cord if your setup is a little bigger than average.

Linus made a video that explains this in depth.

It's if you want to hear low, deep sounds. Speakers won't go low enough for that. You can certainly put it under the desk; on the floor somewhere at any rate.

I bought this bluetooth clip on speaker for my laptop for $30.  It didn't improve quality, but it loudness.  I used it mainly for watching The Daily Show while cleaning the kitchen.  It's fine for that.  Computer speakers will increase sound quality, but in your price range not by much.

All computer speakers have an amp and power supply built right into one of the speakers.  It's actually better to buy all of these things separately.  It sounds more complicated, but it's only marginally so.  Instead of plugging your computer into the speaker you connect the speakers to the amp then plug the computer into the amp.

I'm just learning about this stuff myself.  I'm actually going to get this amp with this power supply.  I already have speakers I want to connect to them, but if I didn't I would probably get a set of these speakers, or 2 of these if it fits much better space wise (ignore the fact that it says "center speaker", you can buy 2 and use them as stereo speakers).  Going this route gives you a million different options if those speakers don't match the aesthetics or price you are looking for.

This will get you audio quality way better than you can get buying dedicated computer speakers.

If you're willing and able to shop on ebay you can usually pick up the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 set for around $100. The Logitech Z623 is a pretty similar affair for a similar price range.
