Adding Ram...

Go to solution Solved by yaywafflez,

Not a silly question at all. The two kits do not have to match each other, but they have to match themselves (if that makes sense?). So you have your first kit already, your second kit just has to be a 2 stick kit as well. The second kit of 2 x 4 GB does not have to match the kit you already have. Before you buy a kit though, you will definitely want to check your board manufacturer, and make sure that the board supports the RAM you are looking to buy. I ran into some trouble, where the board supported 2 sticks of a particular RAM, but did not support 4. If I confused you at all, I apologize. Feel free to message me with any questions at all.

Thanks,

I know it's a silly question, nut I really need to know this.

So I have a 2x4 gb gskill ares ram kit. But since 8gb is starting to be recommended in many games, and is soon to be a thing of the past, I wanted to upgrade to 16. But I do not want to buy a whole 16gb kit, I wanna add on the existing ones. I do not have an x99 setup, just a h97 mobo so it's dual channel. Can I add another kit of the same exact ram in the 2 empty slots? I know it wont be quad channel ofc, but what would it be? It's already running dual, so will the system read the 2 same colored slots as a channel and the other same colored slots as another channel instead of reading the same colored slots as 2 channel?

If it's a bit confusing or youre puzzled I am here to further clarify the question.

thanks

Yes! That sounds like it will be fine, a bit oddly worded but I think understand.

If you bought another 4GB stick and added it to your system you would effectively have 12GB of RAM until you added another stick.

I would eventually max it out though personally, if not just for the aesthetics haha

But it sounds like you want to do that :)

When mixing and matching RAM the computer will run all DIMMs at the clock speed of the lowest speed stick and the latency of the highest latency stick. You can mix and match RAM all you want, just keep this rule in mind so you don't waste your money on super low latency or high speed RAM that will just run at the speed of your existing RAM.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

this ^^

when pheasable, it is good to get identical memory, but if it is too expensive or difficult, look for memory with the same clock speed and similar latencies.
