G'day folks!

For a Christmas present for all of us in the house, my family and I decided to invest in a decent NAS for computer backups and storage of VERY important parent work. Anyway, my two questions about the topic are:

What is a good 2 bay NAS for a decent price (AUD only)?

and

If we have a download speed of 800-1100 KB/s and an upload of 40-100 KB/s, would that make backing up large files (10-80 GB) take forever?

Here is the current information of what we want.

  • The price range we are looking at is about $120-$190 Australian dollars.
  • Will be connected by Ethernet port directly to router/modem
  • Very reliable
  • Fairly quiet
  • Looks nice
  • Storage capacity of about 2-4 TB

Any help is greatly appreciated by me and my family!

Thanks

Main System Specs:

NAS does not go over the internet, it's all in the intranet and does not exit your house.  You'll be transferring at the slowest link between you and the NAS and not the speed of your internet.

You can use NASes over the Internet.

Sure, but why would you want to?  Who's gonna host a 2-bay NAS for a family?

I didn't say you would host it, but if you're out and about, grabbing or streaming files could be convenient that way.

Could just set up a VPN to the NAS really, cheaper and that's what everyone does anyway :D

Otherwise, cloud storage would just work for their purpose except for their really low upload bandwidth.

Cheap NAS:
Synology DX213

D-Link DNS-320L

ZyXEL NSA325 v2

But 120-190AUD is probably a bit optimistic for a NAS.

Other idea:
Some routers have actually NAS functionalities. They have some USB ports for HDD and then they can use these drives as a NAS.
Maybe your router is one of them. This would be the cheapest option.

If you're all connected by wires, transferring files local(intranet) should be pretty fast depending on your hdd or ssd.
If you're doing it on wifi then it will depend on your router speed.
If you're doing it over the internet, eg. from school to home. It depend on the school up and your down speed.

Careful about data cap if you have it.

Sorry about that! I meant the NAS without drives! USB port is not a bad Idea but there is no fail safe protection with it.
