Hello guys was just wondering if the XMP option has any effect on performance during games/startup, etc when enabled. Will it increase stutter during games, because the motherboard recognizes it as an overclock??? or Will it increase FPS in games such as Batman Arkham Knight, Far Cry 4, Mortal Kombat X, and so on.??? or does it just increase the memory to the specs it came with, because I have recently bought a 16 gigs (2 x 8 ) of ram with 1866 mhz and CAS 9 latency and the frequency is currently set to 1333 mhz both rams running on a MSI GAMING 7 Motherboard. So will the XMP have any effect on my computer?????????? thanks in advance

XMP is what inputs the RAM settings in BIOS. If you don't enable, you need to input the settings yourself. Just enable it.

 

RAM isn't actually manufactured to run at 2400MHz or 1866MHz or whatever. That're overclocked to that. They test that it can run at those settings but you need to make it run.

Meanwhile, at the factory where your mobo was made, they have no idea what memory will be used in what motherboard. So they just thow in the default settings most memory is manufactured at. Which for DDR3 for example is 1333MHZ, 9-9-9-27, 1.5V. It's just the safest bet. And you're simply running that setting. 

 

Definitely turn XMP on unless you know how to achieve the effect manually. Which, no offense, you obviously don't.

Frequency is what it runs at... to be honest there isn't a whole lot to gain by going higher after a certain point.

 

Usually to go higher you have to use "looser" timings. The higher the frequency the better, the tighter the timings the better. 

 

For instance... 1600 ram using 9-9-9-27 might be the exact same ram as the 1866 stuff you bought but they have the timings adjusted to 10-10-10-30. As long as both are stable you could run either, which performs better you would never be able to tell other than maybe in synthetic benchmarks and who knows, one may be 1-3% better than the other in a benchmark.

Just enable. Not much of a performance boost, I just run XMP anyways.

dunna know what RAM you are using, but i never had good luck using kingston

XMP. always had to manually install specs to keep from BSOD/crashing.

My Kingston memory automatically negotiated its 2666 MHz, although I don't know if that is just because of my motherboard.
