Should I be getting more FPS?

Will4334

So I have a msi ge62 2qd apache pro. It has a core i7, nvidia gtx 960m, 12 gigs of ram, and its only a month old.  Yet, I'm only getting 100-130 fps when I play CS:GO. Which I'd expect at least 150-200 fps, but I don't know much about computers. So, what I'm asking is if that sounds about right for the specs I have or is it kinda low?

You'r screen is 60Hz it can not display more than 60FPS.

Even if you achieve 1000FPS from you'r GPU/CPU, you wont see more than 60 on you'r screen!!

His computer is putting out more than 60 fps, but the monitor is only catching 60 of those frames per second. So he is actually getting over 60, but only seeing 60. :)

The usual refresh rate of most monitors and laptops

Yeah you probably should be getting a bit more fps with that setup. Are you playing casual 10v10? community servers? competitive? Expect lower framerate on casual/community servers. On competitive I would guess you'll get closer to 200, but of course anything running in the background also affects performance. you wont see any real difference in game between those two FPS margins you listed though.

Well i made this point on my previous comments :)

I get that, (now that I look lol) but 60Hz monitor does not = 60 fps. Some games, example: Audiosurf, cap your fps to your monitors refresh rate, thus if you use the FRAPS fps counter it will show that you are getting 60 fps on a 60 Hz screen. Some games (like CS:GO) may not cap your frame limit to your monitors refresh rate, thus if you use an fps counter, it shows that you are putting out more than 60 fps.

On topic now, I have never played CS"GO on my computer (specs in sig) but your hardware seems to me to be about accurate for your fps readout.

Yes, sort of. Your gpu wouldn't have to work as hard to deliver higher framerates. However, I would recommend either keeping it uncapped or keeping it capped around ~120 or so in CSGO. If you have any frame drops while capped at 60 it will be very noticeable. You can do this in the console in-game using the cvar "fps_max ###". fps_max 0 is uncapped I believe.

No, but it would save your GPU's lifespan.

@Will4334 , welcome to the forums.  Make sure you follow your own posts so you can keep up with the responses.

Let's start with this:

-Is your laptop overheating?  It might be reducing performance to prevent damage.

-Are you running any programs in the background?

-Have you scanned your computer for viruses lately, or defragged your hard drive?

-Do you have mat_queue_mode configured?

Why 100-130 FPS in first place????

When ur screen can not display more than 60!!!

Most games, such as those on the Source engine (like CSGO), will indirectly rely on one's framerate when calculating and processing (not the right words, but whatever) input.  Higher the FPS, the smoother the input will be.  This why:

  • Most people do indeed go for 150 fps, 200 fps, or even more in competitive games like CSGO, TF2, and other FPS games in the eSports scene, as their aim can be more consistent, regardless of their monitor's refresh rate.
  • VSync is being avoided as a solution to screen-tearing, as input is restricted moreso than simply putting an cap on FPS.
  • I thought there were more reasons, so have this pointless placeholder.

I usually don't go this in-depth just to disprove someone, but I figured OP might have a little bit to learn from the resulting argument.

There's also no harm in going over 60, so why bother?
