Home server OS options

Go to solution Solved by wpirobotbuilder,

Hey i have recently gathered a few parts together and put together a server, and just wondering what some possible options are for an OS apart from Freenas. I use the server mainly for file storage but i also like to stream media (have being using plex). An added bonus would be being able to host a TS3 server. Cheers

I'd recommend Ubuntu, specifically the desktop version (more friendly interface). You can do what you want with Ubuntu, you don't need FreeNAS.

Anti particular reason for FreeNAS?

Are you going for a NAS or something with more options like Ubuntu Server or Windows Server or even OSX server?

Looking for more functionality, was considering giving Ubuntu a try.

Will you keep on this thread for assistance or start a new one? also, what file sharing solution do you plan on using?

I might come back to this thread if i need help that i can't find a clear online answer for(Don't want to go around spamming threads). At the moment i have set myself up with Samba.

Cool beans, we'll wait here :D

advice: use the help.Ubuntu.com website. it can be worded a bit strangely at times, but it is strong documentation, and MUCH better than some random guy saying "just copy this code"....also, double check any code people tell you to try :)

ESXi SysAdmin

I have more cores/threads than you...and I use them all
