Would this work?

I got a replacement router from EE today as we've been having problems with our internet connection recently and they suggested it maybe the router so they sent another one out.

 

I was wondering, as the signal isn't as strong upstairs, would it be possible to setup the old router upstairs as well as having the one downstairs? Or would they clash in someway?

Just buy new AC stuff get rid of anything 54g or N or older...

This shows what the standards are for the different types of wifi connection. If your rocking anything that has a a/b/g or n connection type your probably better off ditching that old stuff and getting some newer AC standard stuff, most stuff bought today will be AC its much better than the previous generation for speed and reliability. I had a similar sitaution to you, my router is down stairs and my gaming rig is upstairs I was using a virgin super hub which supported AC but the wifi dongle I was using was only 54g so I bought an AC dongle and my god the difference...

 

Needless to say I swapped out my laptops wifi card as well and never looked back, BTW both adapters were in the £20 range so as long as your EE router supports AC (don't know if it does you prob need to check) get wireless AC stuff ASAP!

Yes this is possible, just remember to is switch off the DHCP on the old router.

your default gateway on the 2nd router needs to be set to the IP address of the first one I think.

 

Can I change that on the router settings page?

Yes you will be able to switch off DHCP in the settings (advanced) also you will be able to set the deafult gateway there too.

you also should think about assigning a static IP to the 2nd router that is outside the DHCP range of your first one.  it could cause issue with conflicts if you don't.

 

My IP address is set to a Dynamic one, should I set it to Static? This is for my main router

But I love the 54g. It is the best router I have ever owned and still use it today as my internet is 10mb/s and it has the linux kernel on it so I can do special things with it

yeah for instance:

 

1st router 192.168.1.1

2nd router 192.168.1.2

 

DHCP range (on first router) 192.163.1.3 - 192.163.1.254

 

DHCP off on 2nd router

don't forget to change the DHCP range too (in your first screenshot -- should start with 192.168.1.3 if your IP on the 2nd router is 192.168.1.2).

So, for the first router I need to put Static then put the IP address 192.168.1.1

Then for the second 192.168.1.1

Then in the DHCP section set the range to what you put above for the first router and for the second router turn it off?

 

Is that right?

first router IP =  192.168.1.1

2nd router IP = 192.168.1.2 w/ default gateway of 192.168.1.1

 

first router DHCP range = 192.168.1.3 - 192.168.1.254

2nd router DHCP disabled

First error - Its saying the address is incorrect and I should switch to a dynamic address
