HDD file sizes incorrect

Go to solution Solved by biotoxin,

well I've managed to replicate your problem on my machine to some degree

on my 250gb SSD I have 2 apps that microsoft "sees" as 1.78TB and 1.77TB specifically epic games developer launcher and xbox one controller for windows

it also reports I still have 49.5GB of free space left

so it's a read problem exclusively or an interpretation or the read data specifically

it's an OS level problem they'll have to fix

I'm looking for an existing fix online right now but as far as I can tell while people are aware of the problem there isn't a clear solution yet

Windows being Windows....

I don't know what you are saying.

Are you saying that your drive is a 2TB  drive but windows only sees 1.81TB, the reason is windows uses GiB and not GB.

Each folder says they're roughly 2TB even though they really aren't...

Hey there :)

I would check if there are any new updates for the BIOS, the OS and driver updates for the SATA controller.
What is the drive's brand and model. To rule it out as a potential cause of the problem I would suggest to check its health. You can get a tool from the manufacturer's website. Checking the raw values from the S.M.A.R.T. status is also a good way to do so. If you aren ot sure how to read them, feel free to post them here and you'll get help. :)
I'd contact the OS's support and see what the guys there have to say.

I had this problem on my old crappy laptop, but I never fixed the problem because I got a PC.

I have a PC.  :D

Can you chose a file from these folders (a big one) and screenshot "properties".

The files report as the correct size when you check the properties, but it still shows a wonky size in File Explorer.

I can't believe I forgot something so simple. It's a brand new WD 2TB green. Exact model is WD20EARX. I also have a 1TB blue, and a 120GB SSD in there too. Neither of those have problems, which leads me to believe that there might be updates as you mentioned. I'll have to check. Good thing MSI has software for that!  :P Thanks for your help.

last time I saw a problem like this it was with corrupted file/s

had a 2gb flash drive with a file that reported it was 8pb because of a write error

other one windows was nagging me about no free space but no particular file was showing up in scans as taking up that much space, a windows SFC scan fixed the problem

Hmm. The files aren't corrupted as they are directly transferred from another HDD. They're just .mp4 files. Each one of them works on the new drive, and they are the correct size when you right click them and view the properties, but it still reports the size wrong in File Explorer.

Did you check the health of the drive itself? You could also run some scanning tools for viruses and malware and see if something pops up.

have you tried scanning with something other than windows file explorer? like jdisk or windirstat?

is there maybe a hidden system file? does group file select report the right size?

try moving the specific files over to another folder/drive and deleting the then apparently empty folder

The drive is new, and in good health. See attached screenshots. There is also no malware or viruses on my system.

Yes, and the files are the correct size. Group file select reports the right size. I've tried every combination of moving entire folders/specific files.

Thanks for your suggestions so far. I would like this fixed, but if a solution cannot be found, I guess it isn't a big deal. Only in the "File Size" column in file explorer is the size wrong. Everything else is correct. Maybe there's just a bug somewhere.

your recycle bin didn't decide to eat the entire drive I'm sure

did you try reformatting the disk? it looks like a non system storage, if you've got space for it give it a try...

did you initialize it with MBR or GPT? what block size?

did you do a system file check? if so were there any errors?

how did you verify file integrity when you transferred the files?

I'll find the solution eventually.

Apologize for not getting back to your last post quickly! For a short period yesterday everything worked correctly, but quickly went back to being wrong. I agree with you, it has to be a bug in the OS. Thanks for your help man!
