how much better is a ips display? i have been using tn panels for ever

They are exactly 37.839% better than a TN panels.

Srlsy, no one can exactly tell you how much better an IPS display is. Each panel is different - so there are good aswell as bad TN and IPS panels.

Generally speaking TN panels are fine and some of them actually have pretty good colors and contrast.

The difference between a TN and IPS panel is noticeable, but it won't blow your mind...

Enough that you will instantly notice the difference. IPS displays generally have far better colour reproduction, contrast, deeper blacks, and the viewing angles are like night and day.

However, it's not as black-and-white as all that. Not all TN and IPS panels are made equal. Dell's TN panels in particular are some of the best that I've seen, even on the low-end. Acer's low-end TN monitors are washed-out and crappy.

Usually TN panels will have better gray-gray response times, but usually that doesn't make a huge amount of difference, especially when factoring in all the other latencies in a computer. Some TN panels are in fact slower than some IPS panels despite their advertised response times. With monitors you really have to do your homework.

Tn panels are found on premium gaming monitors because of their performance. The performance meaning low response time and high refresh rates. At the same time you will be sacrificing some video quality. There are some gaming monitors that use IPS panels but those are much more expensive.
