Network Printing Assistance

Go to solution Solved by tbroadwater2010,

Correct - the Always on PC is running windows 7 64 bit and my personal rig is running Windows 10 64 bit pro, and the other PC im not sure about as its my brothers', but im pretty sure its windows too.

You can install the driver software on the pc you have the printer connected to. Once you have the printer installed, simply go into "printer properties" and select "SHARE THIS PRINTER" in the "Share" tab. From there simply name the printer and your golden.

Now on your non-connected PC after completing the above, add the printer using the "Add network, wireless, Bluetooth" option. Your PC should automatically scan and pick up the shared printer. Select it and run through the prompts and you should be able to print. ALWAYS SEND A TEST PRINT to be sure it is working properly.

So my scenario is as follows

I have a computer that isnt used.

I have a printer that is used alot.

I have a router.

I do not have a network-printer.

What i'd like to know is how i can connect the printer to the always on PC, which is connected to our router, and allow all the other PC's on the network - to print through it, without needing to get off from their seats. This is a big problem as different PC's in the house use different software for different things needing to be printed. To make things evens more difficult - this is paid software, and we are not about to just buy more copies for all the PC's.

Thanks

Hey - Do i require a homegroup running on the network for this to work? Because i tried sharing the printer through the 1 PC and ran to a test PC connected to the same network on the other side of the house, scanned for the printer but the results came up empty.

Hmm not that i know of. My gaming pc was not connected to my parents PC and this worked perfectly fine. Maybe check your sharing settings on the direct connected PC? Make sure printer sharing is allowed on your network and sharing options.

To get to the settings:

  1. Open network and sharing center
  2. Click "Change advanced sharing settings"
  3. Under the HOME or WORK arrow (you will need to open it possibly) select "Turn on Printer and File Sharing"
  4. Try again from the other PC

Not sure if this needs to be turned on on both PCs but you can test that. I would initially enable it on the direct connected PC and then the non-connected PC

Thanks - i found that because of the printers age, it didnt show up when i just simply searched for it. I added it without the need of a homegroup - through searching for the printer by name (with the help of a video to see if this was indeed the fault), and it was. Without your help i wouldnt evens have gotten close to having this done ;) Thanks for all the help, will be moving the entire test setup to its new position in our office.
