This is my first job and I'm under 3 months contract. My job contract will end in two days and I don't think I want it extended (for some personal reasons).

Should I tell them now or let the contract end, and then say that I'm not signing another ?

a margin of two days?

I don't really think it matters if it's just days. But  the earlier the better.

Typically you are supposed to give a two week notice. But that is for a career or just a regular job. No idea what you are supposed to do when you are contracted, but I would assume you should do it as soon as possible.

I think I'll be staying till the end of the month. I am also thinking to suggest that I'll stay until they find a replacement for my position. I just want to know if the timing is bad(which obviously is).

most places ask for a two week notice. two days is really not sufficient, but better late than never. offer to stay until they get a replacement, but with contract work that could be hard, and you could be there for months longer.

That's actually one of my worries.

I guess I need to tell you my reasons:

You see, I've applied for a Web developer position and got the job. But what they're asking me to do is mostly encoding stuff, answering technical issues raised by clients.

For two months I barely did any "development".

2nd week of September, when I'm prepping to tell the HR, my boss asked me that I'll be working on another office for the website they are planning to develop. I postponed my plans. First week of October, I went to the new office, there were discussions of their plans. Come 2nd week and again, I'm doing the same things. Turns out they have an outside developer to do most of the job, and clearly doesn't need me in the development.

This might sound selfish but I feel I'm not doing the job I signed up for, and just wasting my time and knowledge here. I actually feel that my knowledge is degrading and it's kinda depressing.

that sucks. i see now why you want to leave so badly. luckily your in a field with a lot of fresh blood who will be eager for a posistion of your job title. you probably wont be stuck there for months, but it could be a good several weeks to a month to find and train someone.

I was planning to tell them at least a month before. But with the delays, I am not sure if I should tell them now or just let the contract end.

Don't judge dude.

I've got my reasons.

I wasn't, so just chill k?

the question was a rhetoric to emphasize my point that it's just two days. Be it today or two days after, it wouldn't make much of a difference and apologizing and trying to help them get a replacement would still be the right thing to do. It's not a professional thing to do but it's the only way.

btw they also have the option of not actually giving you any letter of recommendation due to your untimely resigning. So better think it through first if you're still unsure

Maybe quitting is not the way to go, have you ever confronted the higher-ups about this?(about the lack of "development/involvement")

Apologies, I misinterpreted that "pinoy pala tsk tsk.".

My boss is actually the owner of the company. He's the one giving out orders.

I didn't think about that recommendation part though.

Giving them two days notice isn't much. But if you just let the contract end and leave it is two days extra than they would have had to find someone new. If you have knowledge from going to school for your job and you aren't using it, but you are doing a boring job then go find the job you really want. The pay might not be as good (though it seems like it would be better than your contracted work) and you might have to re locate, but you will enjoy doing your job. And since that is what you have to do to pay bills and have money to do/buy fun stuff you might as well like doing it.

I would like to clarify that I have no issues with boredom whatsoever - I'm getting paid anyway. What I'm did not like is I'm not doing the job I signed up for. I can suck this up just to have necessary experience to apply for other jobs, but I'm afraid that by the time my "experience" is long enough, my knowledge is lacking because I was not able to practice it.

I am working Monday-Saturday, 6am-7pm (including travel time) so trying to learn/review/study by myself is hard to do.
