SSD's and Defragging or "Optimizing"

Go to solution Solved by Speedbird,

I never know which one its doing. Windows 10 just tells me its optimizing.

It is trimming... defragging does not take 2 seconds. Windows is smart enough to know not to defrag an SSD.

So I understand that defragging an SSD is a huge NO NO lets get that out of the way. From a few articles I have read on other sites it seems that the Windows defrag tool uses some kind of thing that "trims" the flash storage on an SSD and I can't find a specific yes it's okay to use or no don't do it at all you damned fool, kind of answer. Its usually a lot of technical jargon explaining what it does but never if its okay to use or what the consequences are if you do use it. Is it okay to use or should I just trust my gut and never use it on my SSD? I am running Windows 10 Pro x64.

trimming is ok for ssds, but yeah never defrag them... in fact in windows 10 its not even an option to defrag them

Yes, you should trim. Otherwise you will have experience loss of performance.

windows 10 only trims ssds... it knows not to defrag them

Is this something the controller does automatically or do I tell it to trim? If I have to tell it then how would I do that?

Oh alright. Thanks!

To be safe, don't.

This is wrong. Win10 (and 8) automatically recognize SSD's and wont even allow you to de-frag them, only optimize, which really is just their term for TRIM.

TRIM is considered good for your SSD and WILL improve performance (and possibly longevity) of the drive. Win10 does schedule it to run automatically, but doing it manually wont hurt it either.

When in doubt, re-format.

It is automatic, the ooptimise button just does a manual run.
