Interchangeable mac memory

Go to solution Solved by felixbearpig,

yes they are they both sodim ddr3

No. Laptops and desktops use different DIMMs. They are not interchangable. Unless the iMacs use SO-DIMMs.

EDIT: I looked in many places, and it certainly seems iMacs use SO-DIMMs. Apple's website also states they use SO-DIMMs. This is my source: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3011

They're just called DIMMs on the desktop.

Indeed. I saw Apple charging $200 for 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM.

yeah I know they overcharge for everything. Im going to use corsair ram http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/mac-memory-upgrades/corsair-mac-memory-8gb-ddr3-sodimm-memory-kit-cmsa8gx3m2a1333c9.html. I plan to buy 2 of the kits so I can have 16gb in my iMac, but what I want to do is take the memory in my iMac already and put that in my Macbook Pro. This way my iMac will have 16gb of brand new ram, and my Macbook Pro will have the 8gb that was in my iMac previously. The corsair ram says one their website, apple has tested it and approved it for use in both Macbook Pro and iMac, which leads me to believe that if it can work in both then the DIMMs would be the same for both products and thus interchangeable.
