I am trying to fix my dad's laptop which has an i3, 4gb of ram, 320gb wd hard drive. The hard drive is damn slow and i thought i would upgrade it with an ssd. So, after installing the ssd i tried to boot from a usb which has windows 7 in it. I don't know why but it simply didn't boot to the usb. I again tried with the original dvd which also failed. So, the only option is to connect the ssd to my pc, install the os, install the ssd back in the laptop and boot from it. Will this work?

have you checked the boot priority in the BIOS? i think that might be why it isn't booting form your usb.

Buy a SATA to usb dock, (around $9.99 from eBay) and download a software that allows you to clone a hard drive. I did exactly the same, clone the drive by saving an image of it somewhere to an external computer, then swap in the new drive and flash the image to it (Considering you still have the old hard drive).

Theres a guide here, although this is for MacBook Pro's. This is what I used, watch the video at the bottom, similar concept: http://www.cnet.com/uk/how-to/upgrade-your-macbook-install-ssd-hard-drive/

Re-format the USB drive, and recreate it using the Windows USB DVD Creator Tool (I assume that's still used by MS?)
Or burn another DVD. Other than the boot priority, which you say is fine, the only other reason it wont boot the installation disks is faulty media.

Eeh, by gum.

If you have or can get recovery files for that laptop, use them. Problem here is that HDD contains recovery partition which laptops BIOS is looking for when booting.
