Before we begin,  I'd like some feedback from those of you who have purchased refurbished items from newegg, specifically laptops.

I've seen some reviews on this Dell E6240 (refurb)

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834299362

It has decent specs for the price aside from the subpar screen, however all i need it for is for typing up work/notes, and watching videos/surfing web.

Is buying refurbished worth the risk? Tell me what you guys think.

Now for the non refurbished laptops we have the Acer Aspire Switch 11

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA7RD2WX0500

and the Asus Eee Book

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5SC2ZS0051

The Eee Book is $324 & the Aspire Switch 11 is $655 CAD.

Things I need to do:

Microsoft word (Typing my notes, writing essays, etc)

Watching videos and movies (Youtube, Netflix)

Not meant for gaming, I have a gaming PC for that :)

I just don't want it to be very sluggish while doing work or having multiple tabs open on google chrome. So tell me what you think and for those wondering about my budget, I don't want to spend more than the price of the Aspire Switch 11, so $700 CAD max.

Please note: I'm located in Ontario, Canada, so any links posted for xxx.COM will be irrelevant ):

P.S - I will be taking this with me where ever i go.

P.P.S - The Eeebook only has 32gb of storage which does not seem to be up-gradable, and the Switch 11/Dell E6240 have 128gb SSD's

@MRC380 At that price point, I'm fine with refurbished units with the stipulation that the reconditioning is done by the manufacturer and not the vendor or any other third party. If any one else performs it, I'm not interested in the product regardless who's selling it and how reputable they are.

Literally anything will do that. Honestly, for this use case, I'll toss out a chromebook as an option. However, the printer compatibility is annoying and is the only reason why I don't like my chromebook. That aside I would just buy the cheapest one, factory refurbs have never done me wrong yet.

Yeah the Dell is really inexpensive but I read some reviews saying they all received defective batteries, so I'm hesitating :l

None of the laptops i listed are chromebooks, so is the refurbished model a safe buy?

Why go with that acer, do you really need a detachable screen? It adds a ridiculous price premium.

That's why I was tossing the option out there. It does what you want it to do at a relatively (depending on the make/model) cheap price point. I mean it's probably safe but I feel like there's something better out there in your budget.

That's not why I listed the Acer...Its the cheapest laptop that is not refurbished on Newegg.ca with a 128gb SSD and a 1080p screen.

theres a reason acer is pretty much always the cheapest laptops..they are total crap..not reliable at all

why I said the asus one...good brand...cheap....good enough for what you want...and if it did die in like 3-4 years..it wouldn't hurt as bad as a 600$ purchase

Oh I thought you meant you were tossing it out as in not being an option at all. Yeah I thought chrome books would work but apparently the online versions of Microsoft Office, which are compatible with Google docs, are not very good...

A few classmates have acer laptops so I'm not sure what makes them so crap, and buying second hand is just as risky as buying refurbished so I'm not too sure. I'm aware asus is a reputable brand, but in terms of apples to apples comparison and being unbiased, the Acer is the more powerful laptop. Asus may be more reliable in the long term though

ah okay, good to know. Still, the Eeebook only has 32gb of storage, and a lot less once you upgrade to windows 10. I don't believe it has any storage upgrade ability either
