I have heard that you can crossfire r9 series cards with some Radeon Hd series cards so which card could i crossfire with a r9 280 

 

The R9 280 will crossfire with a 280X, HD 7950, or HD 7970.

280 and 7970? Doesn't that involve bios flashing and such?

No, they're all based on the Tahiti GPU, you don't need to trick them into being the same card since CrossFire is more flexible than SLI.

Really? Wow, I always thought you'd still need identical cores, not just architecture.

Nope. A 7970 will operate in "7950 mode" when in CF with a 7950 though, with 256 cores disabled.
