Hi Guys,

Sorry if this isn't the right section!

I am currently looking to host a Arma 3 server with a couple of mods. Firstly how many cores/ram etc. would you suggest for hosting a arma server, website, TS3 and mysql database (VPS)? I am looking for it too be quite cheap to start with and build up later.

Another question I have is: Is a VPS the best option? and what is a good hosting company (UK based servers)?

Please feel free to ask any questions,

James

i'll explain your 3 options here, and why you should or should not go for them:

- renting an arma server, a teamspeak server and a webhost.

this'll most likely be more expensive, you have no idea what your server will be hosted on, how many people are on the same box as you, and how stabile it'll be.

this usually also comes with reduced admin controls, nerfed modding capabilities and a whole other load of mess.

- renting a VPS (virtual private server)

if you do this, you're basicly renting an amount of disk space, memory, and cpu horsepower.

you are free to do with those resources whatever you want (within legal bounds) mod your arma server any way you want, toss up a teamspeak server, have ALL the mysql databases you can think of, host a website, etc, etc.

usually on the cheap side.

the downside tends to be that finding the right VPS isnt always easy, and theres a lot of "bad" hosting companies out there. (but also quite a bit of very good ones)

- renting a dedicated server

with this, you're basicly paying monthly for your very own piece of metal sitting somewhere in a datacenter. you get full access to the machine, decide which OS you put on, in some cases you even get to decide how you set up your hard drives. with this you know EXACTLY what your services are running on, because you know the exact server specifications you're paying for.

other than that, it's basicly the same deal as a VPS, and its a matter of finding the right company to rent from.

and well... usually these things are rather costly as well.

Ok. I think a VPS might be the best thing to start on as a Dedi box can be quite expensive. Do you know any good VPS hosting companies. How many cores/RAM/Disk space would you suggest for Arma?

It looks like there is a nicer deal: a dedicated server with a 4core xeon and 16 gb of ram for 30€/month but it has 40€ setup fees

thats online.net's deal in a nutshell: you get your server on the cheap, but you'll have to pay for the setup xD

well... i dont have personal experience with them, but i've recently heard a lot of good come from online.net

they're a french company, but like... truly french... they've been at it since the early 90s, and only since a few years have really been "open" to customers outside of france.

they're dirt cheap, like, you wont find much cheaper pretty much anywhere else.

they have their quirks: you're paying a quite notable setup fee, their network speeds are "up to 1Gbps" usually guaranteeing at least 100-200Mbps.

their uptime guarantee isnt as high as other companies, but is still very much respectable.

Section 8.02 of this http://www.online.net/cgv-dedie-en.pdf says I may have to pay a deposit?? How am I meant to know if they are going to charge me this?
