Upgrading GPU, need low cost options

Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

Just checked, since my vendor doesn't sell it, I guess I'll have to call about it, other vendors sell the GTX 950 for R2,999, which makes it the same price as a 960 from the discounted vendor.

This is true, did a check up on it, turns out a GTX 950 will get 1-10 frames better in a lot of games. If the prices are roughly the same, then I could look into that.

get the 270X - you mentione waiting for new stuff - the 950 doesn't support DX12 and will fall behind by anywhere from 10-20% in DX12 games. Get the 270X as it's cheap and powerful (will run any current game) and get a new system when you can :)

Right now I have an ATI HD 5770 1GB, which stills does pretty well in most games, but obviously newer games are putting up a challenge, whereas Witcher 3 I cannot even play at a solid 30FPS at 1080p.

I live in South Africa, so GPU's here cost a great deal more than they usually do in other areas, I don't really have a budget yet, just need choices of low costs.

I can obtain an R9 270X for R2,390 which is about $180. Is the card a very decent upgrade compared to what I have? From benchmarks and specs comparison it should give me a huge boost in performance in everything, is there any reason why I shouldn't get this card or something?

My only other choice would be a R7 260x which costs R1,390 which is $104. Do note I'm looking at local shop which we get a discount from, these are the discounted prices compared to other local vendors.

All information would be GREATLY appreciated as I would rather wait till next year when Pascul GPU's come out before doing a revamp on my 5 year old machine.

I don't suppose that they have anything from Nvidia that's vaguely competitive, so I think that the 270x should be a nice upgrade and should tide you over until something seriously better gets to that price.

Sig under construction.

even a gtx 950 will be an upgrade, a 270x would also be a good choice i think but 950 might be faster

Sadly the vendor only has limited GPU supply and doesn't have the 950. The next option over a 270x would be a 960 which costs R500 more but I don't really have the pleasure of affording that.

A 950 would be more expensive and perform the same as a 270X in DX11 and slower than a 270X in DX12.

960 is not worth over a 285/380 anyway. got with the 270X

You should change your location to Cape Town, South Africa bc you're supposed to put the city first.

You said over a 285/380, but I'm just looking at a 270x, from what specs state, a 960 should perform marginally better than a 270x

960 is carried by HEAVY driver optimization - it's better than a 270X but notably worse than a 285/380.

You mention Dx12 games, but Dx12 only came out recently, we shouldn't expect games for it until another year or so. But yeah, I'll only get into Dx12 when I get the new Pascul GPU coming out next year.
