HDMI cable not working

So I've recently got a new 1080p monitor replacing my old 1280x1024 monitor. And well the problem is that the monitor isn't working with the HDMI cable I bought with the monitor. I tested the monitor with the HDMI on my laptop and it worked fine, however on my pc it just doen't work. Im not sure what's causing this, could it be just the HDMI, even though it worked for the laptop? That would be the cheapest to replace. My monitor is a LG 24MP55. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a GPU in your system or are you going through the motherboard HDMI? Do you get any message while the computer is POSTing or booting?

If it worked on your laptop and not your motherboard then it might be your gpu that is bad or just the hdmi port that is bad.

Trying to rule out the obvious at first: did the computer you are hooking the new screen to work previously the way you are doing it now?  Or are you using a different GPU/port/etc.?

Okay, so I only have 1 HDMI port on my pc and i'm not sure if it's the motherboard or the GPU one, I am guessing here is where I should learn to troubleshoot?

I'm not really sure what you mean, but my old monitor used a VGA cable, since the HDMI for the new one isn't working I am currently using the same VGA cable for the new monitor.

So let's recap. You've tried this new monitor and the HDMI cable with your laptop, and it worked, so the monitor and cable are fine. You have not ever successfully run this screen or any HDMI device on your PC before. You have though run a VGA screen on your PC.

This leaves the option that your PC cannot output HDMI, or atmleast not at that resolution, or it is defective. Or it has been configured wrong, hardware or software wise.
