Hello everyone,

I’m looking for a networking product that acts like a switch and an access point at the same time. I want all the devices in the same network and the dhcp will be configured in the main router. So, the logical solution would be a unmanageable switch with a acces point conected to it. However, having two devices seems a little bit stupid to me.

There are routers that enable you to do that (actually it’s what I’ve been using) but they have too few connectors, typically 5. But one of them is a wan port, so as far as I know I can’t use that. Furthermore It would be nice to be able to connect more than 1 cable to the main router to have more bandwith (I don’t know if the term LACP is correct here).

Is there any reliable solution that would allow me to have 8 gigabit ports and wifi? bgn is fine, ac would be cool but it is a futureproofing feature for me since i don’t have many ac capable devices.

Thanks in advance!

Having two devices will be generally a better solution. I've never seen a wireless AP with more than 4 gigabit ports and most of the ones I see these days still only have fast ethernet...

Sig under construction.

That's what i thought when looking up the solutions. I don't understand why isn't there a product

Because if you're going to be using a switch you're not spending pocket change on one or the other. That's why the ubiquity wireless access point exists with only one Ethernet port. And why a linksys 10 port gigabit switch exist and not in combos. They're designed to be better than consumer products in their respective environments.

So trust as we say when we recommend you just get them separate.

I fix computers and computer accessories... sometimes... when I want to...

If we're talking about a single-device solution, I'm still looking

If we're talking about a multi-device solutions, I really like TP-Link switches (you should be able to find an 8 port gigabit one for less than 25 euros), trying to find a good router for about 55 euros...

I don't know how expensive tech is in Germany compared to other countries in the EU, (or which country you're in exactly), but the N56U looks like it's just above your price range (assuming similar pricing to your country) to me so if you can find it cheaper it's pretty decent. http://www.amazon.de/RT-N56U-Diamond-Dual-Band-Gigabit-AiRadar/dp/B004BDS0IQ/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1444661505&sr=8-11&keywords=n66u

An old Wifi capable router can be used as a WAP (wireless acess point), for a hub, go for a switch, wait,  let me try if the switch on my old rouer that is a WAP works, gimme 2 sec :P

Yes! i tested,

If you get a wireless router, set it up as a WAP, you can use the switch on it as a reapeater for other ethernet ports ^^

Thanks, but i've tried it too and yes, it works, but sometimes i have to reset the router, it is not a reliable option... and i think the 8 port router are crazy expensive (?)

I think I'll stick with multi-device.

I don't know if the packet prioritization is worth the price difference

For the acces point i'm still searching..,

The reason why you only get ones with upto around 4 ports is because there isn't really a market for more. Most people who want a combo unit (and I have one) are using it as an access point that also acts as a switch for a few media devices. Or as some sort of media-bridge device if they don't have a wired connection. And as a "media" device how many wired things are people going to connect to it? Probably about three, right? A TV, games console and media box. So why make it more expensive by having more ports?

Anyways, people who want more are just going to get a switch. Because there are far more options for switches.

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing

For a single-device solution, you could probably find some wireless router and leave the wireless mode enabled and turn it into a switch. Being limited by connectors, that might be a problem.

For me, I have a wireless router (that is configured to act as a switch) that devices can connect to. It is plugged into an ACTUAL network switch, because three ports are just not enough for the nine systems I'm pumping through it (the device that supports wireless simply cannot use DD-WRT, there's no support on their site for it; I didn't want to brick the device).

You actually CAN use the WLAN port on the router, if you flash a custom firmware on it (DD-WRT comes to mind, it can do this).
