I currently have the original Raspberry Pi Model B with the 700MHz single core CPU. For a transcoding server with ffmpg to convert to MP4, it slow!  I was thinking about the new 900MHz quad core Raspberry Pi or the Intel Compute stick? I know the Compute Stick has a better CPU. What should I use and what free software could I use instead.

I'd get the Pi since you can tinker and also just bc the compute stick has a better CPU doesn't mean it'll be fast bc it runs Windows. There's a drop for the Pi rn and it comes with a case, a power brick, a usb cable, a braided HDMI cable, and an SD Cards with Raspbian openELEC (which I'd replace with something else).

EDIT: here's the drop https://www.massdrop.com/buy/seeed-raspberry-pi-b-1gb-media-kit

The compute stick has an extra gig or RAM.

My rig: Intel Core i7-8700K OC 4.8 | NZXT Kraken X62 | ASUS Z370-F | 16 GB Trident Z RGB 3000 (2x8) | EVGA 1070 SC | EVGA SuperNova NEX650G1 | NZXT H700 | Samsung 250GB 850-EVO | 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs

If you feel like it you could probably get several and do other things on them like a web server or a remote file server even when you're not at home :D
