no need for 4790k go for 6600k

if your sticking to the 4790k or 4690k get a z97 motherboard so you have sli and overclock features.

for the gpu get the r9 390 they're way better and are generally cheaper than the 970 and more future proof.

v300 ssd's are shit. get a samsung or just any other brand ssd.

psu get a evga or rm series corsair psu. thermaltake make not so good quality psu's

Specs: i7-4790k with Thermaltake Water 3.0, EVGA GTX 970, MSI Z97 Gaming 3, Kingston HyperX 2x8 DDR3 1600Mhz, SSD Boot Drive/1TB HD, CM Storm Stryker, EVGA Supernova G2 750W

Peripherals: SS Rival, HyperX Cloud, G710+

So I decided to go ahead and build myself a gaming PC since I own a laptop for 3 years now... and I wanted to get an opinion out of you guys! thx

BTW I want to keep it under 1500 Euros (if you have any suggestions)

An overclockable cpu like the i7-4790K generally pairs better with an overclockable motherboard using the Z97 chipset.

Get a 2x8GB memory kit. Puts marginally less strain on the memory controller and leaves two memory slots for an upgrade.

When buying four memory sticks, a 4x kit is better than two 2x kits. This removes the small possibility of not being able to run dual channel. It also removes the possibility that the modules might not run at their advertised speed and timings. (XMP profiles are based on kit capacity.)

Get a better psu.

Kingston V300 ssd are not well regarded. You might consider a different brand/model.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

About the R9, (I'M NOT TRYING TO START A "FIGHT" HERE BUT I DON'T REALLY HAVE MUCH INFO) do I really need 8gb if VRAM? I saw a video on youtube lately from Jayztwocents, where he said that the ATI got more expensive than nVidia for what they offer, so that's why I went for a 4Gb 970

I know you're going to think I'm an idiot be I don not really plan to OC my CPU in the near future so that's why i opted for that motherboard.

BTW: I'm really planing to go 1080p and not 1440 or 4k (I don't think it's worth it really, as I am not a hardcore gamer just your average Joe who want's to be able to play some good titles with some fairly high settings !

THX for all the answers so far !

Because the i7-4790K cannot be overclocked on an H97 motherboard. So one may as well save a few € there and put it elsewhere.

See if you can find a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB ssd. If it fits the budget it would be an excellent choice. Otherwise something like Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB, Sandisk Plus 240GB, Silicon-Power S60 240GB would be reasonable choices.

Too bad about the psu. Are any of Seasonic M12II 520/620 (modular), S12II 520/620 (non-modular), Antec HCG 520/620, or Cooler Master VS-550S available and fit the budget?

So if I would like to keep the 4790k i should get a z97 board?

I found the evo it's just 20 euro more expensive, so i'll go with that. I found now the seasonic for about 120 euro..

I would suggest getting a Z97 motherboard if you get the K cpu. You do not have to overclock it, but the option is there should you wish to later. It will also improve the resale value.

Ok so i have multiple options but don't really know what to get:

  • Asus Z97-Pro Gamer
  • ASRock Z97X Killer
  • ASRock, Z97 Professional
  • Asus Z97 MAXIMUS VII HERO

The last two go a little over the budget...

I would go with the Asus Z97-Pro Gamer. I should mention that I really like Asus motherboards. Good quality, excellent BIOS and feature set.

Another question, do you think i should get a better cpu cooler or could i just stick to the one the chip is coming with?

The stock cooler is pretty good but something reasonably inexpensive like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO will let the system run cooler and quieter. If you go with something other than the stock cpu cooler, make sure that it will fit in the case.
