Ok so i bought a z87 maximus impact off ebay second hand and the bios update button is broken. I tried putting a 4460 (haswell refresh chip) in it and the cpu error light went on, and when i start the computer nothing goes on the screen. Does this mean the motherboard is working, but it can't boot because of the processor and the bios not being up to date? Or does it mean that it is broken and cant boot at all?

Should i buy a cheap haswell z87 chip and update the bios through windows? or should i buy a new motherboard?

So out of my depth :(

You'd have to update the BIOS first to ensure everything is functional. Its current response is correct, as it won't display anything if hardware cannot be detected due to variables.

So if i bought a cheap G3220 for £35 of amazon would i be able to run windows on it? and update the bios without the bios button?

Yes. You can update within the BIOS(as long as you have the new BIOS on a flash drive).

So i can update the bios if i have a compatible processor to run windows with and memory stick with the biosupdate on it? And i dont need the bios refresh button?

If so im going to buy a cheap compatible processor now :)

It depends how cheap the Maximus VI Impact was.

The RoG Bios flashback is genuinely one of the most useful features for me - I avoided having to buy another chip just to flash mine to work with Haswell refresh chips. Kinda defeats the purpose if you have to buy two CPUs to get it to function.

Also makes me wonder what else is broken - did the seller disclose this to you?

Yes they did, but only after I had paid. They offered £20 of the price for a board with a broken bios button, so i agreed. But when i received it it had no internal padding/ antistatic bag or IO shield. At this point i just want a computer that works. Should i get a cheap processor to make it work that way, or should i get new a cheap motherboard and try and return this one?

Thanks for the help :)

I'd return it on principle - but consider how inconvenient it would be for you.

Would you be without a functional PC for a significant amount of time if you sent it back?

Well I have a crappy laptop for uni work so im not desperate. But i do want to start using a decent pc that works for gaming etc. At this point im willing to pay an extra £35 to have it. All i really want to know is that i can update the bios without the button if i buy processor. I just want the stress of having a £600 pile of parts in my room to go away :/
