So I've been looking on google for any freeware to recover files from a drive that, Windows, says it needs to "format" the drive so it can be used.  How ever this is just a 500GB WD Green that I have had for like 6 years and really need to get my data off of it before I format it.

The only software I run into is ones I have to pay, and was hoping someone here might be able to help me out with this, or point me into the right direction. :(

Thanks,

Is the hard drive failing or is the partition gone? If the partition has disappeared then the entire contents of the drive could possibly be recovered by recovering the partition with several different free softwares out there. The data recovery software that is free or commercially available will only recover certain types of files. That is why total data recovery is such a high priced thing. Special hardware, software, talents and shills needed to remove the discs and set them up in a special machine to read the entire disc(s). If the drive is failing then you want to use it as little as possible, as every moment it is used it is approaching the end and a total failure is approaching. After that failure it can only (possibly) be sent out to the high priced data recovery companies.

I think the drive might have corrupted itself from a bad connection to the board.  I had found it missing one day and months went by and decided to fiddle with it and noticed the sata connection was loose, but also wasn't making a difference in windows so I swapped it out with a different cable and it appeared with the issue I have now lol.

I would try and recover the partition first. Some data recovery tools have to be able to read the partition to work.......
