Before you post no in the comments, i would like to ask you to not do so unless you have tried to run g-sync using an 800M series GPU.

I know that on the official supported list the 800m series is not included however people on other forums claim that the 800m series does infact support g-sync and it would be logical because they are based on kepler, which on the desktop side does support g-sync.

Thanks.

The 850M is based on Maxwell AFAIK.

You need a laptop that uses mobile Gsync (which on laptops is just Adaptive Vsync, lol) over the eDP standard.

That's for laptops built-in G-SYNC displays, but for external G-SYNC monitors I don't think this is true.

You're right - Gsync monitors have a G-sync module built into the back of them. How it's used, i don't really know, but on laptops at least, it just uses the embedded Displayport connection, which supports adaptive Vsync, and has done for years. It's kind of intriguing, because in theory this would mean that Gsync doesn't actually need a module.

So theoretically OP's laptop could support Gsync, but most likely does not because of software. The hardware is there, the drivers just won't allow it.

Nvidia says it doesn't. I can't find any reference to the 800m series supporting gsync anywhere. Not even the whole 900m series supports gsync, so that doesn't surprise me.

I haven't personally tried it, but good luck finding anyone who has. The people buying a gsync monitor and those interested in an 850m powered laptop rarely overlap, and would be put off by nvidia's claim that the 800m series doesn't support gsync. I figured an answer that wasn't backed by personal experience is better than no answer at all.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Nvidia claims there's a difference between mobile and desktop gsync, and that the on screen module will be used for cool features in the future. I don't necessarily believe them, because I don't see what else the module could provide other than adaptive refresh rates, but we can't be sure I guess. My advice is to stay away from both free- and g-sync until these things are cleared and one has a clear advantage on the other.

I think the OP is asking about external G-SYNC monitor support here, not integrated/mobile G-SYNC, but correct me if I'm wrong...

That's right. I have a friend selling his G-Sync monitor (for some odd reason) and i want to know whether i can utilize G-Sync (external on a monitor) or not (via miniDP - DP on my laptop w/ 850M, i just assumed it was kepler, my bad.).
