The EW-7811Un is probably using wireless b/g because you most probably have your router set to auto which sends a wireless signal of its choice when no cross signals will happen. It may also be because of the distance of the PC and laptop to your router when you use it.

You can configure the router to send only a wireless N signal and the laptop will only receive a wireless N signal and thus have faster speeds but if you are not a networking fella, leave that shit alone.

im going to device manager and trying to switch wireless mode but it only gives me the option to switch to b or b/g, the EW-7811Un is capable of just the wireless n signal right? i dont get why it wont give me the option and im pretty sure the router isn't the problem

There is no real problem here, this is just how wireless works. The EW-7811Un is a b/g/n adapter and your router supports, i am sure, a/b/g/n and if the wireless signal on the router is not set to 40hz on the 2.4ghz band then it will send any signal it chooses to any adapter it chooses. The device manager is not what you want to mess with although you can set your adapter to wireless n mode in the properties of your adapter. It may increase speeds then again it may not.
