So long story short I'm building a custom server cabinet styled Raspberry Pi cluster node server.  It's going to consist of 2 Pi's and 2 HDD's the PSU is a powered USB hub the case itself will be about 8-10 inches tall it's as wide as an HDD sled because I am mounting my Raspberry Pi's to HDD sleds as well as my HDD's so that it will mimic a server tray.  So that's about 4-5 inches wide depending on the sleds I buy.  The HDD's will be connected via USB to SATA cables and the case will be fully modular.  The basement of the case will be 3 inches tall 6.5 inches in length and 4-5 inches wide.  What materials should I build this out of besides metals and plastics?  I'm thinking Balsa because the HDD's will be heavy enough to hold it down.  I also am planning to build more 8-10 inch beams so that I can add height thus adding more HDD's and Pi's.  Ultimately I will make either a large one or several smaller ones so that I can have a 40 node system that's 40 Raspberry Pi board.  That's over 16,000 cores but remember these ARM processors but this should suffice for my kind of work.

So question time

What materials should I build it out of

What are the best ways to code software

Are there home management softwares for the Pi yet?

If you're looking for some easy-to-use distributed computing software to get you started, then there's a python module called 'dispy' which is really straightforward.

If I was constructing it out of wood (to blend in with a cabinet/shelf or something) then it'd be MDF or ply. Although balsa is nice to work with, it'll more than likely bend or break when you start piling hard drives onto it.

What do you mean by 'home management softwares'?

Eeh, by gum.

Well, I'm planning to make a software that works in tandem with Raspberry cameras, and it will be like the cameras linus has where it tracks stuff.  I will be integrating that into PI cameras I'll wire through out my office, then I'll make some stuff like remote oven control or something because if you can do it with motorized blinds.
