So my friend at work today was trying to argue a point of amd cards having better image quality than nvdia

Is there any truth to this ?

I thought the game engine was responsible for how things look and it just tells the gpu what to draw

Between AMD and Nvidia in general? No. However, some cards can support 10Bit panels, which would technically mean they have better image quality, but it is dependant on the GPU and monitor, rather than AMD or Nvidia.

Once in a while you hear about a glitch that affected image quality on one vendor's GPUs or the other, but it's usually patched very quickly because that can be seen as an attempt to cheat on benchmarks.

Tech sites do pay attention for this, though.

they are the same the only difference is that AMD cards do not support VXGI, physx and gameworks so in some titles they will look much worse...not because the rendering is different, but because there are many things AMD GPU's just can't render.
