Ok so i'm forced into building a new PC for school ASAP. I really wanted to wait to see what AMD and INTEL were going to come out with next year in terms of new cpus. School has cut that plan up, shredded it, and then thrown it in the incinerator. I need a PC capable of running around 3 Virtual machines of windows 7, 8/8. and 10. Minimum 8GB of RAM with recommended 16GB. I also want to be able to do some gaming when i'm not studying but my HD7770 will suffice for a good while now. My budget is maxed at $1000 but i'd prefer to stay well under that. Also I want this thing to last for several years to come in terms of CPU and RAM. I'm not spending over $700 of my banks money for a machine that will only last me till next year. Any Ideas?

Adding one thing I forgot: I live in Canada so prices need to be in $CAD.

Something like this perhaps? The Xeon offers better value for money than the 4790.
I do recommend a GPU upgrade some time soon though.

I could shave another $50 off of this (with no performance loss), but I liked the white, blue and black colours.  :)  Also, the CPU cooler is for quiet operation.  Stock cooling would do just fine.

So what the logic of going Xeon E3-1231 V3 instead of the i7 4790 other then price to performance? Also what about a large SSD instead of a smaller one and then a large HDD later or vise versa?

Sorry for the late response.

The Xeon is like having an i7 4770 (non-K), except that it does not have an iGPU.  It is mainly to save money while benefiting from the hyperthreading.  For gaming, it does as well as the i3/i5/i7s at the same clock.

120GB is not much.  With 240GB+ you can actually install games on it and not have to worry as much about filling it up.  You can always add mass storage later.  I run my PC without a mechanical drive.  It is quieter and cooler.

That looks fine.

The Corsair Force LS is great on sequential read/write (large files), but is it sluggish with 4K random R/W (small files) speeds.  It is still really fast, when compared to HDDs.  Corsair customer service is really good.  I have a Force 3, and it has been replaced by Corsair with no issues to do so.

i added a 650w gold psu in case you want to get a new gpu that requires 600+w or has a pull of 250w at the minimum. this should give you enough headroom for an overclock on the gpu.

if you want to make it less expensive, change the psu to the EVGA 110-B2-0750-VR or the Antec HCG-620M

Your build is compatible, but it is over $900.  The previous build was under $800.  There is no performance benefit between the two build, other than the SSD.  The EVO is faster than the Corsair LS.

Is there a reason you picked a $70 cooler for that Xeon?  The Xeon is fine on stock cooling, it is just louder.
