Like said bevore, you need a 64bit Windows to use more RAM.

So the OS is the bottleneck? thanks.

I have 4 gb of DDR3 RAM in my current desktop but only 2.21gb is usable. Can anyone tell me why that is and how i can correct the problem?

What OS are you running? Is this different than just the RAM leftover from OS processes?

the OS takes up about 1.5GB or less. you only have 2.21 GB available to use.

You have a 32bit version of Windows installed.

 

Only solution is a clean install of Windows 64 bit.

the only version of windows(in recent times) that limits you to 2GB is windows 7 starter edition.(which has no 64bit version), or windows vista starter(which limits you to 1GB).  even 32bit home basic lets you have 4GB.

if i recall correctly, 32bit os's actually limit your addressable total memory(not just ram) to 4GB, so it'll be limiting your gpus vram as well, so that could be reflected their as some may be getting reserved for your gpu.

 

you're best bet really is to upgrade to a 64bit system.
