Ethernet wall wiring

Go to solution Solved by W-L,

We want a secondary router/switch mostly because I have two pc's that needs ethernet cable and my panents got one, else we got wireless.

Ok then that would be your best solution, as said the secondary router needs to be setup in bridge mode the suffice that. You need to directly connect to the secondary router from your PC to setup the unit and specify it's IP address.

This is a an example on how to do it:

Hi!

Me and my dad have been trying to establish a connection between our router and another router or a pc through our walls, we are using RJ45 jacks and cat5e cables if you are wondering.

We are using fiber, so we have a "mediabox" as it is called on swedish.. and we want to connect it like this:

Mediabox -> router 1

Router 1 -> wall jack 1 (upstairs)

wall jack 1 -> wall jack 2 (downstairs)

wall jack 2 -> router 2

router 2 -> pc's

That's roughly how we want it to be connected, we have been testing to switch in different ways between the wall jacks, but if anyone could tell us how it should be connected it would be great. And it isn't over 100 meters or anything, but I'm not sure if it could be that it's too much resistance between wall jack 1 and wall jack 2, and it's that point it wont work. and the cabels in the walls souldn't be damaged because we got connections when we are checking with a voltage meter..? (Dont know what they are called..) but it would be great to get some help with this, so say like if the cables are changeing if like 1 and 3 switch places or anything.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forums!

The best thing is to get an ethernet tester to see if your cable inside the wall is still good, if it's not a problem them I assume it's your setup since you are using two routers the secondary would need to be placed in bridge mode to act as a switch and wireless access point which I assume is why you want a secondary router.

Thanks for the article, it was quite helpfull, or atleast i know more now :D  But we want our secondary router to be conected through the "wan" port. and it works when we connect a cable from router to router, and not through the wall. So i belive a wiring diagram in between wall jacks would solve this.

When you use to routers, you usually have the secondary as the slave so you would not connect it to WAN.

I still don't get this wiring, should "cabel 1" come out as cable one on the other side of the wall or does it switch with any cable?

I have a similar setup with a secondary router but connected to the secondary router through the WAN or internet input port but did have to setup everything in bridge mode to allow for that.
