Check out Linus OC guides if you want to learn how to overclock, but to answer your question your overclock that you are able to come up with will almost always be better that an Auto OC

I have an MSI z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard, is the OC genie button useful for simple for oveclocking or is it better if I type down numbers myself?

I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO air cooler for a point of view.

Do manual and aim for 4.6ghz, should be easy and not get to warm on that cooler.

Using and auto OC is easy and can work, but sometimes it can damage the cpu as it doesnt know when to stop.
