Geforce FX line & overclocking?

Go to solution Solved by MrOldMC,

In hwbot.org you will find benchmark results from pretty much all nvidia and ati cards. From that time radeon 9800xt was the fastest card.

Ok thank you for the response that helps me out a lot thank you for the information.  Thank you to everyone for helping me in my odd quest to build a retro PC.  The LMG community and Linus Tech Forums are the best I have been to so far!

Ok so whilst gathering parts to build a PC from around 2004-2005 and I was trying to decide what should I put the most time into, so I decided to put most of my into selecting the right GPU.  So after much research and planning I came to the conclusion that the Nvidia Geforce FX 5950 Ultra is one the fastest cards from 2003-2004.  It installs into a PC with AGP 8X, and has a core clock speed of 475 MHz and a memory clock speed of 950 MHz, now the interesting thing about this card is the 2 year newer Geforce 6200 only has a core clock speed of 300 MHz and a memory clock speed of 500 MHz.  So I believe that just proves how powerful the Geforce FX 5950 Ultra really is for its time.  Although I am interested in what range of games I could play at MAX settings, for example 1998-2001, or 2000-2004, you get the point.  Lastly I would like to know how much higher can I set the base clock speed before I run the risk of burning out the card.  Thank you for your time.

Ok thank you that is very interesting but....that still leaves me hanging as to whether or not it is a good card, and should I look into a different card.

You only need to get a new card when you can't play the games that you want to play at the performance/settings that you want them at.

Yes I know I am not stupid I build PC's as a part time job!  I am trying to build a retro computer that can play a range of games from 1998-2005 at high settings.

The FX-5950 is about as fast as the Intel HD 3000 video integrated into the Sandy Bridge CPUs. It is not fit for most modern 3D games, and it couldn't run many of them anyway as it does not support DirectX 11. Nvidia stopped supporting such old cards with driver updates ages ago.

Well, obviously it's going to run games from it's own era just fine. Quake 3 engine was big at that time, so anything based on that will run quite well: http://www.ranker.com/list/games-made-with-the-id-tech-3-engine/reference
