I need to upgrade my power supply for the R9 390 i'm getting this Christmas, I'm looking for a great power supply under 80 or 90 US dollars. This is my current system with my current power supply and the R9 390 I'll be upgrading to (in case you're wondering I currently have a GTX 750ti). System: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/VmgZbv

EDIT: Also any recommendations for good a good type of R9 390 to purchase.

What are advantages to gold over bronze? Would that be enough juice to crossfire two r9 390s?

For 2x 390s you need a 750W unit and it'd be a bit more expensive.

I don't recommend the EVGA B1/G1 750w. They are based on lower-end platforms (FSP Raider / Aurum) than the B2/G2 (Super Flower Golden Green / Leadex).

Here's the EVGA Supernova 850 B2 if you are going to CFX for $79.99 after MIR: http://www.ncixus.com/products/?usaffiliateid=1000031504&sku=98820&vpn=110-B2-0850-V1&manufacture=eVGA&promoid=1428

Yep :)!.

It's a good quality unit and 150w is a pretty decent amount of headroom. so the unit wont even be that badly strained.

Im sorry but 150w is not head room, out off all the parts of a pc the psu is the single most impostant part.... dont cheap out. Get a good 1000 watt psu like rm1000 or and evga 1000 watt

Wha? you dont need a 1000W PSU for a single 390 o_o (maybe for 2 390's and leaving a bit amount of headroom) 150W headroom with a good PSU is just fine. plus the RM series isn't all that great.

infact 500 out of 650w is just around 3/4th's capacity, if it was a CX600 or Thermaltake TR2 then yeah. but it's a pretty good grade seasonic Unit..it'll be fine.

You can run 3 390s off 1000W....

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Its not about what you CAN run off a 1000w. Its the fact that for just a few more bucks you can have a cooler and quieter set up. And the lower % you your psu has to work, the longer its gonna last, and BS the RM series isnt good.

What I said in another thread.

"Getting a higher-wattage unit doesn't always mean a quieter operation. It depends on the power supply, and as such, if noise level is a concern, it may be best to do research on the noise output of that unit, rather than assuming that a higher wattage unit will be quieter.

For example. Remember that a 1000w PSU will run hotter at 100% loads than a 400w unit at 100%. Because of that, a more powerful, thus louder fan would be installed to effectively cool the unit. Take the Supernova 1300w G2 and 1000w G2 for example. Because the 1300w unit has a stronger fan, it had ramp up ~1100 RPM initially, and topped out at over 2000 RPM, whereas the 1000w unit started out at 950 RPM and topped off at ~1500 RPM at 100% load.

Also, oddly, unlike the 1000/1300w unit, the lower wattage 750/850w G2 has "Eco Mode". Basically, a switch to turn on semi-passive and fully active cooling - making these two unit quieter at lower loads."

As for it being cooler...well, that depends on how you look at it. You could say that a 550w at 50% load would be generate less heat than a 1000w unit at 22.5% load because of better efficiency @ 50%. Of course, the difference isn't really substantial either way (~10w being wasted as heat) and the 1000w may have a larger heatsink to help with the heat dissipation.

However, let's say the fan does spin up later and being more quiet. It is due to that, that the power supply will operating at a higher internal temperature because the fan is not assisting with cooling. For example, here's a blog @ Corsair made by Jonny Gerow on the noise output of the RM series. At a 444wDC output, the 550-850w unit had the fan settle around 650-690RPM eventually (which isn't loud by any means). However, the RM1000 remain unmovable for most of the test and spun up only for two minutes. While this support what you had said about it being quieter, it's because that the fan doesn't spin up as often, the housing of the PSU was at it hottest in comparison to the lower wattage units. Many people were concern for the lifespan of the capacitor used, and it doesn't alleviate their concern if the fan isn't cooling it.

I find it better to have your more general productivity in fanless mode, while having the fan spin up during your more demanding application (gaming and such) to cool the unit but low enough for it to be quiet. As such, I would say to get the highest quality power supply you can get that can power your system first, and if it is within your budget, feel free to get a larger unit within moderation.
