For just gaming? There is next to no benefit to the hyperthreading in most cases, thus the 6600K. Also cheaper.

The 4790K didnt exist when I bought the processor. You can check out my semi completed build log in my sig. Look under Chibi PC.

The 6700K is almost as much as the 5820K and yo uget a lot more for your money with the 5820K, in the CPU itself and the platform. If yo udont need teh better platform save yourself some money and get the 6600K since all you get is hyperthreading and a small bump in cache. I didnt mention the 5930K since it nearly 2x as much and your average gamer wouldnt need the lanes.

basically the thought is if you can fit the 6700K in you budget spend just that little more and fit the 5820K. Otherwise just save your money and get a 6600K.

well thanks for the advice. but as i said im not buying a new pc

There is no point in buying hardware based on what if's, especially since things change so quickly. Also intel's quad cores still thrash AMD octa cores even in highly threaded tests.

well you didn't read the article well it doesn't mention an amd cpu it mentions 8 cores in general and how much time it takes a game to render a frame on an 8 core cpu using directx 11 vs 12 so what this means is that know most games take advantage of 6 cores max while in dx12 games will take advantage of all 8 cores and as the chart shows a faster fps

http://www.winbeta.org/news/amd-directx-12-will-finally-unlock-true-potential-your-multi-core-cpu

what about that would that change how core count matter for games

We dont know if thats true or not because no games or not many have been released with DX 12 yet.

And again thats ONLY if devs allow more then 4 cores to be used.

This has been the case really since at least Sandy Bridge-E and the i7-3820 which could only OC via BClock since it had a semi locked multiplier not being a K SKU and I still stood by this idea just as I do now.

hell then 16 threads should do amazing and be fully utilized. I actually really doubt this will happen. i think at best game will probably be coded for 4-8 threads. Unless the engines automatically scale well your not going to seem anything amazing. Also I predict probably 2 full years from launch before a proper fully supposed DX12 game comes out. You have to remember the vast majority of things, even AAA titles run DX9 to hit the most users. With the death of XP and the free upgrades to 10 hopefully this can and will change.

5820k, 5930k, and 5960X Is actually worst for gaming because games are not optimized to use all 6 or a cores.

That's actually not the case at all.

The comments in this thread make me want to cry.

At least it reminds you that deep down you still have feelings.
